The alarm blaring pierced the alcoholic veil of sleep I was in. I pushed one brown hand out of my cocoon of warmth and slapped around trying to find my phone. Finally I touch it and pull it under the blanket. I squinted at the screen and almost had a heart attack, 7:30am , I had half hour to shower and get to office. I groaned and rolled out of my cocoon and moved zombie like to the bathroom. I heard chattering and I sped up. I didn't have time to chat!
"Don't think I didn't see you,"yelled my roommate Anna. Mercifully I heard the door close behind her. I sighed and sat on the toilet to pee. Thankfully I lived walking distance from my job.
My name is Chloe Lane. I'm 25yrs old. I'm a editor at a Publishing company. I live in Korea the land of idols. My fav pastime is to go idol hunting. Originally I'm from the caribbean but after deciding to change my life after looking at one Kpop video I came to Korea armed Only with my degree in Language. Fortunately I knew Anna from online and she helped me with a place to live and getting a job. In exchange I pay half the bills and it was a good barter. Except when she dragged me to her blind dates and I end up hungover the next day. Unfortunately none of the real men in Korea can live up to the idols. At my job I was in charge of three writers of webtoons. So far I was lucky that they were very talented. Their Webtoons were successful and in turn so was I. I stripped and got into the shower. That was a addition I had paid for. I didn't get Koreans fondness for baths. I grew up with showers. Quickly I showered and dressed. I was a tiny chic. Five feet exactly with a curvy body. Small waist, big bum, neat boobs. My hair was thick and long and I had it a deep purple streaked with silver. Not bad really. I threw on a Black trousers and a red silk top that was long sleeved. Cream coat and cream heels and I was sailing out the door after pulling my hair into a smooth thick ponytail. Unaware of how my entire life was going to be twisted by the End of the day. I walked busily to my work place. It was a huge tall building five block's away from our apartment complex. I had been randomly walking around the area one day and had crossed the street and saw the ad on the building doors. I had been sceptical about that. But I had decided to try my luck and walked right in. Interviews were being held and I had walked in with a jeans and shirt and no resume.  I was Sure I would be rejected immediately but they had actually allowed me to interview and then take a test. I had learned Korean in the Caribbean from the consulate.  By chance I had seen a ad in the papers advertising language classes and had jumped at it. When I took the test I had aced it apparently. I had been surprised when I got a recall. I had dressed properly that day and entered the building with my resume. One year later I was a senior editor. Living in the center of Seoul was always hectic. Sometimes I was a bit apprehensive about the men. Korean men had a bad way of dealing with foreign girls. They assumed that because we are foreigners we had no standards. And they were aggressive. Not all mind you. But most of the city guys were. I had taken self defense classes in the Rec center. Anna and I were friends with the Sensei there. Even though it was only five block's away it was still a long walk and i stayed late at work. I buzzed myself in and said good morning to the security and ran for the elevator. In less than five seconds I was at my desk in the office and ready for work.
"Chloe, coffee?" Asked Sulee the girl next to my desk. I had four Co workers. An Seu Lee who was 21yrs old and Korean and very small in stature and cute. She was soft spoken and had a hard time controlling her writers. There was Kang Soojin, who was loud and always throwing words at me about being a foreigner. I usually ignored her,she was just jealous I had gotten Prince the best Webtoon writer as my client. Then there was Lee Bee,and yes that was her name, she was the office clerk and usually kept to herself. The team captain was a big pain in my ass ,Choi Jin. He was tall and handsome like a idol in fact he was a ringer for the actor Lee Soo Hyuk. And he was a arrogant prick that thought he ruled the world. He and loud mouth Soojin were the perfect couple. But obviously they weren't dating. That wasn't allowed in the workplace. At Seulee i nodded and walked over to the little kitchenette. We made our instant coffee and was about to go back to our seat, officially work had began but Soojin came in the kitchen and grumbled about people using the coffee,
"Since I actually buy my own brand and stock it here your comment is redundant" I said in rapid English and she scowled at me and went out. She barely understood English and when I spoke it quickly she always backed out. It was a year I worked with them I could handle it all.
"Nicole, the boss would like to speak to you,"called Bee from the other side of the office. Quickly I drained my coffee and went. Our CEO was young, only 35. He was handsome and fit as well but there was a menacing air around him. For the life of me I could never be comfortable around him and he looked like a gangster. He was tall and built like a god. His skin color was bronze.
I knocked and he murmured in a deep voice come in..
The office was dimly lit and I could smell a Black vanilla candle scent burning. He was standing behind his huge mahogany desk on the phone literally yelling at someone. Now I truly understood why his office was sound proof. He turned and pinned me with his deadly eyes and pointed at the chair opposite his desk and motioned for me to sit. Framing his desk was a solid gold plated nameplate with CEO Kim Ro Woon on it. The man intimidated me without even being aware of it. I sat and picked at my nails nervously quickly trashing through my brain to see if I had done anything wrong. Nothing came up. Surreptitiously I scoped him out. He was tall and had broad shoulders, obviously he worked out a lot, his biceps flexed in the expensive white shirt as did his pecs. His hair was dark choclatey brown and cut so that it fell sensuously over his eyes. His jaws were chiseled and his lips were full and red. The man was sinful to look at. That's when I caught myself and tried to look professional but I realized he had hung up the phone and spoken to me while I had been ogling him. Blood rushed to my face and I looked like a boiled tomato I was sure.
"Sorry sir, you were talking to me?"I asked literally feeling my IQ dropping. Way to go Chloe. Now he thinks you're a retard. He raised his eyebrows but repeated his question
"Have you been to see Writer Kathy? Her site has not been updated for almost a week. She should be updating her story twice a week." I sighed. Kathy was a wonderful writer but she was flakey. She wasn't my client officially she actually was Seulee's client but she could not handle her. Therefore my dumb ass had felt sorry for Seulee and dealt with her. Now look where it had gotten me. I couldn't rat out Seulee so I answered
"No sir,but I'll get right on it now!" And I stood but with a slice of his hands in the air my ass made contact with the seat again immediately. Fuckk!! I was pretty sure I had bruised my hip on the handle of the chair.
"Exactly how long did you think I would be oblivious to the fact that Kathy is Seulee client?"he asked in a deadly tone. I was about to break out in a sweat.
"Longer than this?" I peeped out hoping he would stop being so intense. But I definitely had read the room wrong. He strode from behind his desk and was abruptly directly in front of me. He leaned down and dropped his hands on either side of the chair locking me in. In another time I would have been turned on but I was literally afraid of this towering 6ft2 man. I knew if he didn't reign in his anger what I've hidden more than a year from everyone would come out in seconds. The hard obnoxious knock on the door followed by the grating voice of Soojin was my savior. Quickly he straitened and was behind his desk before she entered.
"You can leave Chloe, but this conversation isn't over,!" He said menacingly and I scampered out the door immediately not even stopping to snipe at Soojin. In fact I went straight to the bathroom and collapsed on the couch. I put my head between my legs and breathed.
When I was a kid in Trinidad, I had been a witness of domestic violence. Not personally but second hand and being locked inside the house by my mom to protect me from seeing it had affected me worst. The screams of our neighbor as she was beaten by her husband had tramatise me more than if I had seen it. Now if anyone raised their voice to much and I felt like it was violent I panicked. In short I suffered with a panic disorder. But staying in Korea had been a good experience for me and I had managed to keep it hidden from the mere fact that I felt safe. Not even Anna my Best friend knew. But my boss it seemed brought out my disorder. Little did I know that it was my subconscious warning me of the danger I would soon be in.
