"I'm at a payphone trying to call home all of my change I spent on you."
Drew stood, his head bowed by a payphone next to a road. The road wasn't filled with cars, like how the city roads might have been, but rather, it was deserted. The road, after all, was in a lightly wooded area, leading to a rural but grandeur carnival.
Zoey... she had seen her rich other boyfriend in the carnival and that was where Drew found out the truth the shattered his heart. She was a cheater, a liar, a gold digger. He loved her but he never received love in return. He just wanted to experience love, WAS THAT SO HARD TO ASK?
He choked on a sob, his hand placed over his crying eyes as though he didn't want anyone to see, despite there being no one around. He shakily checked all his pockets for coins, but there were none. He had used them all on Zoey.
"Where have the times gone? Baby, it's all wrong. Where are the plans we made for two?"
Drew sat on the rough, grassy ground, his sobs louder and heavier. The betrayal hurt, it was a burned hole in his heart, the pain feeling almost unbearable. He thought that she loved her, he would have assumed that she had fallen deeper in love during all the times they spent together.
The shopping sprees they went on. That was one of his biggest memories with her, since they spent most of their time together in the malls. He saw it now. She had only brought him there for him to buy stuff for her. He was a wallet to her, that was all. Nothing but an item, just like how almost everyone else saw him.
The times they want to luxurious cafes and buffets. The jokes they made over the tables, them sharing the food. Dancing together outside the restaurants, only illuminated by a streetlight... Did it mean nothing to her?! Did she just use him for her own gain..?
"Yeah, I, I know it's hard to remember the people we used to be."
He couldn't bear to remember the first day he asked Zoey out. They were both just 14 back then, young, naive teenagers. Drew didn't see her gold digger qualities and tendencies. He regret it, he hated it. It hurt him to think that he wasted 2 years... 2. YEARS.
... 2 years of his life on her, on the wrong person.
"It's even harder to picture that you're not here next to me."
Yet... even if she was the wrong person, she brought him happiness, even though the happiness was short-lived and in the end... fake. He recalled back to when Zoey held him as he cried over Jake betraying him and going for the Music Club instead. He was already going through a hard enough time, and that just made him snap. That was probably the only time Zoey really cared for him, with genuine kindness and empathy. He wished she would hold him now, but remembering that she was the one who started all his pain made him push the thought away.
"You say it's too late to make it, but is it too late to try?"
Zoey's eyes were filled with disappointment as she turned to Drew, back at the carnival. Disappointed about losing Drew, or in her other boyfriend, he wasn't sure. But that disappointment spread onto him.
"I suppose it's too late to fix this relationship," she had told him hours ago.
"It isn't too late to try though..." Drew took a step towards Zoey, ignoring the other boy next to her, his eyes pleading.
She had pushed him away.
"And in our time that you wasted, all of our bridges burned down."
Drew continued to try and beg for Zoey to come back to him. Tried to tell her that he would try to forgive her.
Now he realised that he just wanted love. He didn't want Zoey, he just wanted someone to care for him. All of the people he was closest to, Jake and Zoey, they both left him, and now he had no one left to care for him. After all, Henry and Liam only really cared for each other.
"I've wasted my nights, you turned out the lights, now I'm paralyzed."
The summer, evening air comforted him, only slightly, as the night was staring to fall. There was a soft breeze blowing, almost as to try and pat Drew on the back and tell him that one day he'd find the right one. A car rushed passed, and he recognised that as Zoey. Through the light from the evening sun, he saw Zoey, staring at him and him staring back.
She turned away from him, pushed him away... again.
"Still stuck in that time, when we called it love, but even the sun sets in paradise."
He wanted to run after her, he felt the urge to do so, even when the thought of her pained him.
"We used to be in love... or at least say that it was," Drew muttered to no one, "Why did you leave me?"
The sun started to set, the shadows loomed before him, almost looking like they were taunting him. He brushed a tear savagely from his eye and buried his face in his knees.
"I'm at a payphone, trying to call home, all of my change I spent on you."
"I JUST WANT TO GO HOME NOW," Drew yelled into the fabric of his pants.
He didn't care over the fact that his parents were busy and emotionally withdrawn. He didn't care that maids weren't allowed to speak to him because of that stupid 'social status' rule. He didn't care that none of his friends were going to his house to comfort him. He just wanted a hug, that was all he needed.
But he couldn't get home, and he was more alone than ever.
"Where have the times gone? Baby, it's all wrong. Where are the plans we made for two?"
Maybe this was all a prank. Maybe he wasn't really going to be alone. Maybe the times they spent together wasn't thrown into the trash, maybe the car Zoey was in would U turn so that Zoey could come running up to hug him and kiss him and tell him that it was all a late April fool's joke, despite it being July. Maybe they would continue to plan their future together.
He looked up from where he was sitting beside the payphone, hoping to see the car's headlights, to hear the car's driving.
No one came.
Of course.
"If "Happy Ever After" did exist, I would still be holding you like this"
No one came so that Zoey would hold Drew, and Drew would carry Zoey up, tears stained on his face and hug her, and tell her never to pull that prank on him again.
Happy ever after? What a joke...
"All those fairy tales are full of ****. One more ******* love song, I'll be sick."
Drew didn't think he'd want to touch a fairytale book ever again, the pain of seeing all the happy endings in the fantasy world. In the fantasy world. It wasn't the real world. True love was almost as rare as seeing snow in July.
A love song started to play in his ear, how happy and joyful the singers sounded.
"Love and happiness, my ***," Drew sniped, grabbing his airpods and throwing them to the ground.
A soft treading of footsteps on grass came from in front of him, but they were so faint that he wasn't sure if it was just the wind. He didn't care enough to look.
Suddenly, a hand tapped his shoulder and he looked up, someone with an outstretched arm, his airpod in hand, and a concerned face looking down at him.
Drew's eyes softened as he saw who it was and he thought to himself...
'Y/n... Thank you for being here for me.'
