Death knew his time had come. It just seemed so unreal. It had seemed like only yesterday he was flying faster than a jet across the night sky to collect the souls of poor creatures. Where had the time gone? He had been doing this for 10,000 years, and yet, it seemed like nothing.
"Death?" someone softly whispered, along with a light knock on his door.
Death, startled out of his daydreaming, slowly rose from his chair that he had been thinking in. He glided over to the door and opened it. A hooded figures was standing in the doorway.
"What is it?" Death sighed.
"It's time," he said.
"For what?"
"The Choosing Ceremony," he replied. "Now or never, I guess."
Together Death and his loyal servant made their way down the hall of his castle to the Ceremony Room. The Choosing Ceremony is always very simple. Every Death who must complete this would go over the collection of souls he had in his possession and read their backgrounds from when they were alive on Earth. From there he would choose his top five and train each one until he found a new Death. Suddenly they made it to the giant room and he took his seat at the long table where he had his most trusted advisors and sorcerers, Death's Council. His minion scuttled off to the side and stood, waiting.
"The lords and ladies of Death's Council," his announcer stated, "today is the special day of the Choosing Ceremony. On this day, Death himself, will pick five very lucky souls to start training with him to possibly one day become Death himself."
The man continued to ramble on about this ceremony and the rules. Rules such as, Death may only pick one of the souls he's collected, it must be human, and so on and so forth.
Finally the speech was over and the Searching began.
Death scrolled through many names and backstories. Age did not matter in the choosing because each soul would become the age of 21 so they would be young enough to train and arrive healthy.
Timothy Rolfe: Age: 37, Cause of Death: lung cancer, Career: Lawyer "No," said Death
Angela Freight: Age: 79, Cause of Death: Old age, Career: Vet "Next."
This continued for hours. hundreds of billion names were called. Only one soul had been picked so far and that was a criminal named Andrew Stephens, who was 34 and died of a bullet to the head. Things slowly started to pick up.
Jade Yue: Age: 38, Cause of Death: head trauma, Career: Martial arts teacher, Black belt in karate
Death perked up and said, "Her."Two down: three to go.
After several more hours of searching, three more souls were picked. A World War 2 veteran named Gary Bhang who dies at 89 of old age; an archer named Levi Harrison who died in a car accident; and Kendall, a retired track competitor and gymnast who had died of natural causes at age 92.
Death was done. By tomorrow, all souls would be turned into 21 year old versions of themselves and filled in on their new lives.
