Death’s room was more like the Death she pictured. It was all dark with no windows to let in any light. If there was any in this place.
“Sit.” Death casually sat on a chair. There were only three pieces of furniture in the entire room. Two chairs and a desk were all that occupied the room. “What do you want to know?” he said.
Kendall slowly lowered herself into her seat.
“Well?”
All of these questions flowed into Kendall’s mind. She figured she only had a short amount of time before he got annoyed with her. Unfortunately, Kendall could not keep her mind straight and asked, ”Why do you only have three pieces of furniture?”
“I’m glad to see you have your priorities in order.”
“I mean...uh..I meant...ugh.”
“Well to answer your question, being Death, I don’t need sleep. I never get tired. That eliminates the bed. The chairs and desks are only for consulting in. All other furniture pieces aren’t a necessity.”
“Um...ok. Well why am I here?”
“Here’s the good question. Being Death, I am only allowed to be Death for 10,000 years. This is because they fear that the power will go to our heads as the first Death’s. I will then join the council after a new Death is chosen. When I choose to retire I will continue to serve the new Death. You are here because you have the chance to replace me.”
“Are those other rooms full of people trying for the spot?”
“You would be correct.”
“But wait, multiple people die each minute. What are you doing here if you need to be collecting them or whatever you do?”
“I have a substitute while I’m Choosing. I can also get my servants to collect souls for me when I need a break.”
“Ok, but why me though? I don’t think I’d have what it takes to be Death.”
“I chose you because...” Death paused. He didn’t want to answer because although she was strong, athletic, and one of the best for the job, he had other reasons for picking her. “Uh..because of your skills. You are very athletic and that’s good for Death. And you are smart.”
It was as if Death lost that cool he tried to show off and Kendall, disappointed in the answer, only replied with, “Oh.”
“Well if that’s all you need...”
“Oh yeah. I’m going back to my room to get some sleep. Uh..thank you.”
“Yeah.”Kendall slowly made her way back to her room. With all her questions answered, nothing made sense anymore.
