EARLY LIFE

Javier Canneo Bernal Mendoza was born on April 25th, 1987 in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico to María and Mauricio Bernal Mendoza.

Javier grew up in the city of Cadereyta de Montes with his parents until the age of 6, when his family immigrated to Tallahassee, Florida in the United States. His mother worked as a dental assistant and his father was a forklift mechanic. Javier attended Amos P. Godby High School. He did wrestling and baseball.

When Javier was 7 years old, his younger brother Ramon was born. Javier and Ramon were very close growing up.

After high school, Javier attended Tallahassee Community College. He majored in Building Construction Management and played baseball for the Tallahassee Eagles. He worked at a fast food restaurant during his education and visited his family frequently.

Once graduating from college, Javier worked as a construction worker, and later a construction manager. He had a few girlfriends during this time, but none of them he considered serious.

When the outbreak first began, Javier was visiting his parents, little brother, and his brothers friend, Zach. Zach had been staying with the Mendoza's while his parents were on vacation.

Javier's father, Mauricio, was attacked by an infected person and died from blood loss. Mauricio turned into a walker and tried to attack Ramon, but his mother intervened and put down her husband. Javier, his family, and Zach, escaped Tallahassee before it got locked down by the government.

For weeks, the four of them wandered eastern Florida. They survived off of scavenged food and lived in abandoned houses. Javier's mother struggled with mental health problems, resulting in her being unable to get out of bed for days at a time. They dragged her everywhere they went, even when she begged them to leave her.

Eventually, they met other survivors and traveled with them. Javier and his family were with this larger group for about a month before they ran into a herd of walkers. Javier's mother refused to run. Javier and his brother tried their best to get her out, but they had no choice but to leave their mother behind.

All that remained of the group was Javier, Ramon, and Zach. The three travelled for months and ended up in Georgia. They came across the prison on their travels, which accepted them with open arms.
