One thing I didn't know about the tight knit group of the Rusty Toe was that they had to actually hunt their own food. In the back of my head, it made sense. they were obviously off the grid, so the bar couldn't receive any shipments.
One thing I knew for sure was that we weren't in the nineteenth century. After much persuading on Elliot's part, I decided to go with him and two burly men named Alvor and Adjorn to go hunting. the two silent men; as I was notified, were twins. very scary twins. they looked almost exactly alike, down to their freckles.
The twins had bright red hair that looked like a fire, dark expressionless eyes, and each had a metal leg. Alvor had one on his right side, and Adjorn on his left, so when they walked next to each other, it looked like they were sharing a body. As the small group was walking out of the door, with an armed Alvor and Adjorn taking up the front, and Elliot and I in the back only armed with gutting knives for when things got--bloody.
"You see, the twins are the groups main hunters. They mostly get squirrels and an occasional deer, so we usually don't eat much." Elliot whispered to me as we walked behind the silent brothers; on the lookout for animals. then, an idea struck me as we walked through the small game trail in the pine scented air.
I turned my heat sensor on. when I looked around, I gathered why the group usually didn't eat much. there simply weren't any animals there. after a few minutes of fruitlessly searching in the large forest, I turned off my heat sensor, realizing I was just waisting battery. The twins suddenly stopped, making Elliot and me crash into their burly figures; toppling us over and onto the muddy ground. as we sat in the mud, the two men crouched down and started edging toward a large rock, their weapons at the ready. Elliot stood up quickly and helped me up from the dirt. then he did the unexpected. Elliot covered my ears. a loud gunshot sounded through the whispering forest. a small gasping sound came from behind the rock and Elliot let go of my ears. I looked up at him and he smiled almost sadly. Elliot and I walked over to the large rock and realized they had caught a rabbit. I gagged. although I wasn't becoming a vegetarian any time soon, the rabbit looked so sad. "time to get to work." Elliot said grimly. I stared at him as he grabbed his knife and started cutting. I will spare you the details. I didn't do much, it looked like Elliot was very experienced in this line of work. my only job was to dispose of the *hem hem* entrails. if you know what I mean. at that moment, I realized hunting wasn't my cup of tea. as we carried the now skinned rabbit back to the bar with the twins in front of us, Elliot asked me a very odd question. " Alexis-that is your name right? Anyways, I was wondering, about your memory. Do you remember anything at all from your life before all this?" He asked, almost stuttering on his odd question. I thought for a moment. All I could think of was that face, smiling back at me with those friendly; laughing green eyes. Was it really worth bring up? Too late. " well, there's only one thing I remember-it's a face. I don't know if this guy was important to me or not, but I definitely remember him." I answered thoughtfully. Elliot nodded and looked away. I stole a glance at him as he was averting his gaze. I realized his hair was only partly brown. the other half was a shade lighter so it looked like leaves on a fall day. I looked away before he realized I was staring at him.
