3 am.

I was so hungry. Being the lookout at night was the worst job I'd ever had.

I slumped against the wall and brought my knees to my chest.
I just want to get this over with. All of it

I heard a thud next to me and lifted my head from my knees. Jean say next to me, staring at the stars.

"Hey Jean"

"Surprised you haven't fallen asleep yet bitch"

I smiled and put a hand on my stomach.
"Too hungry"

He nodded. We sat in silence for a bit. While I had known Eren, Armin and Mikasa since before the wall fell, Jean was by far my closest friend here.
Well, if you could call it that.

"Y/n, you're most likely going to end up in the top 10. Where ya gonna go next?" He asked me.

I looked at my shoes.
I was easily one of the best fighters here, not to brag. (yes to brag).

I could choose any branch. The Garrison, The MP, The Scouts...
The Garrison was a boring job, guards sitting on their asses all day in the villages. Stationary police at best.

The Mps seemed pretty decent, I mean, all the had to do was protect the higher ups, which was rare. Easy job, probably boring.

The Scouts... the group with the highest casualty rate. Almost daily they would lose a soldier.
I mean, at least they weren't bored?

"I don't entirely know..." I started. Jean scoffed.

"You have the chance to live your best life as an MP and you don't want to? Are you insane?" I hinted anger in his voice.

Was it really crazy of me to want to join the scouts? It seems borderline suicidal.
No.
I want to fight.
I want to avenge my family.
I want to fight alongside my friends.

I shrugged. "I don't know, to be honest it seems boring. Plus most of my friends are probably joining the scouts.."

"So if your friends jumped off a cliff so would you?" he snarled.

"Yeah probably" I shot back.

He got up and dusted his pants off.
"Yeah whatever. Have fun dying at 18"
He walked back to his post.

After our shift I didn't see him the next day.

I sat at one of the tables with a plate of food. I know I said I was hungry but after what Jean said, I lost my appetite. At least I wasn't tired anymore.

"Hey Y/n, mind if we sit here?" a voice broke through my thoughts.

Armin, Eren and Mikasa took a set by me.

"Go ahead, I need it anyways" I mumbled.

Was Jean right? Was I going to die young?
I mean having combat skills is good for going against someone your own size, not a 14 meter titan.

Something nudged my elbow. "Hey are you ok? You seem more drained than usual" The blonde asked, his blue eyes piercing through my soul.

"Huh? Oh, yeah I'm fine.. just got in an argument earlier." I forced myself to take a bite of bread.

Same old slop as per usual.

"What happened??" Eren asked, his curiosity not able to contain itself.

"Well.." I probably shouldn't have, but I proceeded to tell them everything about the fight.

"Jean's a bitch" Eren angrily took a sip of water.

I nodded. "Yeah but that's why we're good friends" I cracked my knuckles. The drowsiness was starting to catch up to me.

"Hey Y/n? I think I can help" Arlert said before standing up.
"Jean and I are roommates so maybe I could talk to him? Maybe your little fight is the reason he decided not to come to breakfast." Armin emptied his tray.

"Really? Yeah that would actually be great thank you" I offered him a tired smile.

We waved goodbye to Eren and Mikasa and headed for the dorms.

"Y/n promise me something." The blonde boy said as we approached the dorms.

"Hmm?"

"If I help you, you have to get some sleep after this"
He stared right at me.

I was so tired I just stared back.

"Ok? Y/n?"

"Hmm? Oh yeah sure." I nodded and broke my gaze.

Armin opened the door.
To my surprise no one was there.

"Huh, usually he'd be back by now, either sleeping or showering." Armin mumbled.

There was no noise from the bathroom so I figured he just wasn't there.

"Well, we tried. Thanks anyways Armin." I patted him on the shoulder. I started to make my exit but I was stopped.

"Hey Y/n?" The boy asked while grabbing my wrist. "Can I ask you something?"

Anxiety rushed through my body. Why was I nervous?
I think I just didn't want to get in another argument with a friend.

"Yeah, what's up?" he let go of my sleeve.

"Did you live in Shiganshina?"
