Tristan

A simple mistake was all it took for me to end up in a place like this. But that's how things are supposed to go for people like me right? I'm what the doctors consider to be "unstable". Ridiculous, yeah? Well I've lived my whole life with ludicrous labels like that. It didn't come as a surprise that someone would eventually think I needed help.

"Are you paying attention Mr. Grey?" The sound of her voice broke through my thoughts, making me flinch.

"Not really," I sighed, not bothering to pretend that I had any kind of interest in what she was saying. Her eyebrows knit together making her stern face look all the more serious. I could tell she was trying to suppress her irritation.

"Then I'll start again. My name is Amanda Harlen. I will be looking after you from now on. I'm sure it has been explained to you that this will temporarily be your new home. And there are rules that go along with living under this roof. I expect that you follow them like the rest of the residents that live here." I rolled my eyes before I could stop myself.

"'Looking after me'? I'm seventeen, I think I can take care of myself." I slouched down in my seat knowing that I'd probably just earned myself a long lecture. Ms. Harlen rose slowly from her desk to loom in front of me.

"Really?" She smiled icily down at me. I looked away from her sharp hazel eyes. I didn't like it when people stared at me. It always felt as though they were silently judging. I decided to let my eyes rest on a photograph of a man and a little girl that sat on her desk. I inwardly chuckled without humor. That little kid had the loving family that I never "deserved". "If you are so capable of handling yourself then maybe you would like to explain why you haven't been attending school. Or would you rather talk about the packs of cigarettes found in your duffel bag-"

"You went through my bag?!" I yelled, my anger flaring. So being "unstable" meant that you lose every ounce of privacy you should have.

"Please try to understand, Mr. Grey. This house is supposed to be a safe environment for the residents. We had to check for any-"

"Weapons?" I questioned. It was a typical worry from someone considered to be normal. A crazy person like me would surely have a gun that they would carry around to shoot whoever they wanted. When she didn't respond I decided I wasn't obligated to sit in that stuffy office anymore. I walked down the hall of the monstrously sized house and into the room that was assigned to me. The walls were a disgusting sand color that matched the duvet neatly placed on the bed. There was only one window in the cramped room that allowed air to flow through. "So much for self expression," I sighed.

I reached for my duffel bag that was conveniently placed at the end of the bed. I discovered with seething disappointment that they had taken my cigarettes away. This was where I was going to have to live until I was deemed normal. So in other words, I was stuck here forever.

I'm sorry if it was a bit of a slow start (and short)! I'm new at this haha. Anyway, I hope you stick around to read the first chapter. I promise it'll get better! ^_^

Thanks so much for reading!
