"Dear God, I don't know if I can keep this up."
I basically slam my hand into my alarm clock as I get up yet again at 6:00 am for work. I work at Metropolis Studios in London. My boss insists that I get there early to help schedule and organize the companies "to-do's". I don't understand why I need to, but I'm getting a few extra quid on my paycheck so I can't really complain.
I eventually roll out of bed and put on an outfit that definitely screams "I don't want to be here" and "Golly! I love my job so much!". White Dungarees, my Beatles t-shirt my mum got me for Christmas, and a pair of working boots I found next to a dumpster on my way home from the pub. I lazily put my hair in braids and brush my teeth. Downstairs my purse lays on the kitchen table from the day before, on its side with receipts and pocket change about to fall out. It's so early that the sun doesn't even reach my full window yet. I can still see shadows of the trees that line the sidewalk. My cat Mosey, waddles his way into the kitchen, honking quietly.
My phone rings.
"Ello?"
"Y/n, when are ya getting in? I've been waiting here for 15 minutes."
"What? Shit, what time is it."
"6:04"
"You're Joking."On the phone was my best friend, Dorothy, but everyone calls her Dottie. She's somewhat my assistant? She's supposed to help me with work but I get so caught up in it and get it done faster than I figure.
"Dottie for christs sake how did you wake up earlier than me."
"Oi it doesn't matter, get your ass down here or the boss is going to notice!"
"Ugh fine. Should I bring Mosey again"
"I personally would say yes, but we have alot to do today. The night guard said there's a message for Mr. Richards and that we need to call back as soon as we can. So hurry up, I don't like talking to people I don't know."I hang up. I open my cupboard and search for some sustenance. "A banana.. Yeah that'll do." I walk to the table and gather the contents of my purse. As I opened my door, I felt something at my feet. I look down and mosey is gone. "for fucks sAKE MOSEY NOT TODAY" I run down the sidewalk and my elderly neighbor, Walt, is holding him. "I'm so sorry Walt, Mosey doesn't know his manners." "Oh it's alright love, have a good day". I plop mosey on the other side of my door and lock it.
Walking to work is always a good time. I see tons of people living their lives, just like me.
As I approach the tall building, Dottie is standing with her arms crossed and a small paper bag squished near her ribs.
"Dottie!" I yell in cupped hands. She turns and looks at me. I stop at the wooden doors. "Took ya long enough." "Dottie if you want me here earlier, pick me up." She rolled her eyes and smiled. Out of the two of us, Mr. Richards trusts me to keep the key to the building. I unlock it. The stuffy heat of the building hits us in the face. Since it's an old building, the a/c has to be manually turned on every day, so during the night heat gets built up and the building doesn't have proper ventilators. "Okay y/n, the night guard left the phone number on your desk, I gotta run to Mr. Richards office and drop off his breakfast before he gets here. Oh shit almost forgot, got you a muffin." Dottie places the muffin on the corner of a stack of papers. It looks slightly squished, but still edible. My banana! Must have forgotten it when Mosey got loose.
I hear Dottie's heels click down the hallway and finally take in the ecosystem my desk has created. I admit, I'm not the cleanest person, but since I've been working overtime my desk has gotten out of control. I scoot the trash bin next to my desk and shuffle things around. Eventually it's clean enough and I finally dial the number that had been left on my desk. It's written on a ripped napkin and the 3rd number is smudged. Its either an 8 or 3. I dial it with the 8 first.
"Hello?"
"Hello, this is y/n from Metropolis Recording Studios in London, we got a messag-"
"Who is this??"
"Erm, y/n, the manager secratary for Metropolis Studios, this number was left for me to call back. May I ask who this is?"
"Well little lady, this is Sam Brown, an accountant. I have no Idea who you're tying to call this early in the morning, but you got the wrong number. Bum off!"He hangs up. I re-dial with the 3 this time.
"Hello, Mr. Curbishley's office, How may I help you?"
Thank god, a person I can talk to.
"Hi, this is y/n from Metropolis Recording Studios, we received a notice to call you this morning."
"Oh yes! One moment please."
As I sit there I see Dottie walking back down the hall. She's waving her hand in her face. She walks to the breaker box and turns on the a/c switch. A loud noise comes through the building and a soft humming continues."Hello?"
"Hello, this is y/n from-"
"Oh yeah, Metropolis. Is Mr. Richards there."
"He hasn't gotten in yet, would you like me to call back when he arrives? It'll be another 10 minutes. I can also place you on hold?"
"Nah love just call back. I'll be waiting." He hangs up."So who was it?" Dottie asks. "I have no idea, some Mr. Curbishley?" "Oh yeah, I heard Mr. Richards talking 'bout him yesterday.
The front doors open and Mr. Richards walks in. He places his briefcase on the floor as he removes his coat and puts it on the coat rack. "Good Morning girls." Wallace, his assisistant, walks in behind him holding a manila envelope. They both start to walk to his office. "Oh Mr. Richards, Mr. Curbishley called, I'll connect him to your line". They keep walking.
I re-dial the office and connect it to Mr. Richards Office. Dottie pulls her chair up near my desk and we start sorting through papers.
A few minutes later Wallace returns to the room holding a few stapled papers. "Mr. Richards would like you to go over these, and he needs em' back when you can." "Alright" I look through them and can tell it's a new signing contract. Nothing too different. A new band "The Who" is going to join our recording studio. I'm always excited to hear new bands and meet new people. I finish the papers and run them to Mr. Richards office.
"y/n when the new associates get here, could you show them around. Wallace would do it but he's helping me with some complicated assignments." I nod then leave.
