Three days after I’ve confronted Adrian and his mother, news came from Melissa that he finally confessed. I guess guilt finally took over him. The police had a workable case and Adrian would be tried as an adult with attempted rape, knowing that he was 18 already.
When news spread in school about Adrian’s conviction, two girls came forward and confess with the same accusations over Adrian. I guess if it wasn’t for Melissa’s bravery to stand against him those two would have never seen justice.
Melissa finally learned how to use the brakes on my bike and because of that I installed a foot stand under the second wheel so that we can ride it at the same time. Like I promised, I went to the so called coffee shop she boasted about; better yet she agreed to take the wheel.
“Were you able to get some facts?” I asked her; remembering my offer from a few weeks ago.
“Uhh, not really. But I know them already. Lay them on me Johnson!”
I laughed then I told her a coffee fact. “Coffee grows on trees, did you know that?” I boasted.
“Pfft, seriously? That’s a fact?”
“Yeah it is.” We shared a laugh by then. It was really great how we get along so well.
“I don’t even think we should be sharing facts. Coffee and tea are beverages; we should criticize them by taste.”
“You just don’t want to share facts because you know you’ll lose.”
“What?” She laughed, “Tea is calming, and yes that’s a fact. Are you happy?”
“Coffee is for people who bolt. Tea is for wusses.” I just wanted to tip her over a bit, but she just kept on laughing.
“Wusses? Are you saying I’m a wuss?”
“Maybe.”
“Hey,” She punched me playfully on my arm, “Let’s order.” She orders black tea with a bagel and I ordered Americano with mocha doughnuts. “That is so typical.”
I chuckled, sending the waiter away. “What is?”
“Coffee and doughnuts.”
“Oh come on. I prefer coffee over tea but I am in love with doughnuts.”
She looked surprise, “Really?” She brushed her hair behind her ear and let her elbows rest on the table, leaning in closer. “I didn’t know that.”
Her eyes kind of sparkle, she had a different look with her. These past few weeks Melissa has been acting very weird. Almost like she was interested in me. You see that’s the thing when you like somebody, everything they do, you feel like it’s somehow significant with you.
Like you just want them to want you back all the time, like everything they do has meaning. For example, when Melissa just sits with me so closely in her bedroom I automatically take it as a sign that she wants me back. See how stupid that is? Well that’s how I feel.
And now, her leaning in so closely and seeing the interest in her eyes makes me think that she actually is interested in me in a way that I want her to be. She just makes me so confused sometimes, like I was wrapped around her finger or something.
I brought The Fault In Our Stars with me because Melissa said she liked the vibe of reading inside that café. I have read past Isaac’s surgery, the trip to Amsterdam, and the unfortunate news of the return of Augustus tumors.
At this point I was already tearing up; I was reading the part where Isaac, Hazel and Augustus created a pre-eulogy. Isaac’s speech was rather humorous but very meaningful, but Hazel’s was downright lovely and wholesome and beautiful all at the same time.
