Thirty days after
Amara was glad to finally catch Nora Turner. She had been trying hard to get past her defences and steal some data from the FBI. However, since she was unsuccessful, it was better to eliminate the little brat entirely.
She had to keep the entire thing a secret from Callan, as she had no idea about how he would react. She was his girlfriend, after all. Amara had figured out that he was trying to protect her. He kept on misleading her that all the members had set up great defences, that it wasn't Nora who had done most of the work. But she knew the FBI. After Andrew, there wasn't anyone as good as this girl.
Now that she had been brought under the influence of the game, Amara was going to observe her minutely. She had already received data from the game about Nora's vulnerabilities.
Leah knocked at that point of time. Without waiting for an answer, she came in. "Aren't you going to do anything about Elijah?"
Amara shook her head. "No. He knows nothing. We shouldn't risk anyone for him."
"Then why are they keeping him? To have fun?"
It took some time for Amara to come up with the answer. "No, they might be trying to mislead us."
Leah rolled her eyes. Amara had no idea why Leah had grown so hysterical over the past few weeks. Since she didn't have a lot of work to do except observing Nora, she decided she would find out.
"How's the girl?" Leah asked.
"Well, nothing special. She's just like the other ones. Hesitant a little first, but eager to find out. About the negative things in her life."
"How long is it going to take, you think?"
"I can take as long as I want, but it will be dangerous. Others may understand she's under the game's influence. I want to end her as soon as possible. In a week, at most. It's one of the fastest suicides the game will ever cause," Amara replied.
"And Amara," Leah faltered, looking here and there, as if afraid that someone would hear. "When Callan finds out?"
She looked confused. "Why should I worry about him? He will understand. He always has."
"But, he's changed, Amaranthine," Leah insisted, probably using the full name to emphasize upon how crucial the subject of discussion was. "Haven't you noticed how he's changed?"
Amara gulped. "I have."
She often thought about the look of relief she had seen on Callan's face when he had managed to bring her out of the FBI prison. She was proud of him. He had destroyed Andrew's society, and killed her nemesis, all by himself. He had proven to be her worthy successor.
Together, they had developed the game and made it perfect, unconquerable.
"I don't think he likes what you're doing anymore," Leah prompted.
"Why did he bring me out, then? Why did he help me to make the game?" Amara was surprised to see how logically flawed Leah's arguments were.
"Ever since he met her, Amara," Leah said, "Will you deny that he's changed? After all, he's still young. It's natural for him to fall head over heels in love at this age. I'm just worried that he'll end up doing something stupid for its sake."
Amara trusted Callan. He was a smart guy. He knew that love was a superficial thing. Most of the times, it only served as an obstacle in the path of success.
"He wouldn't, Leah," Amara replied. "Trust me. He'll forget her."
"What if he doesn't? Wha-" Leah protested.
"You're being illogical, Leah," Amara cut her off. "Don't make me angry. You'll regret it."
She's never spoken to Leah this way, so both of them were equally surprised.
Leah opened her mouth as if to say something, but gulped back her words. "Alright," she said with a huff. She walked swiftly out of the door, slamming the door shut behind her.
Amara looked at the door regretfully. She shouldn't have spoken to Leah that way.
However, she needed to kill Nora soon. Just for the sake of proving to Leah that she had been right all along.
