Beginning of the end : and a short sob story

June 4th, 2077, Monday. This is when it happened. Something that changed the entire world. The bang.

It was just a normal day in sector 227 in Mars. people lived their normal lives, they played football, rugby all the cyber sports. The old were outside. The youth stayed inside. A fine typical day, or so we thought...

But first let me back up a second. My name is Will. Will Diaz. I am 15 years old. My parents were normal people, well at least as normal as an Earthling family could be. You may be thinking what an earthling family is, well, let me paint the picture for you.

20 years ago, earth was dying. My parents were on a project to inhabit another planet, they found mars as a 'temporary' solution. Turns out the solution wasn't so temporary at all. My dad was a scientific genius. My mother was an engineering prodigy. My dad found a way, my mum built it. They were unstoppable. They also happened to be the two of the 5 people to stay on earth trying to save it, hence why they are called the earthlings. The tragic part of the story is that they didn't exactly go by the rules. They had to be killed. They ran into hiding and waited. Bidding their time, seeking asylum.

Eventually they found out... I don't want to talk about them. They killed my parents. Now I must live with my uncle. And that's how it is for the past 13 years. My uncle is not too bad, I mean he's taught me Spanish, English, French and German ever since I was with him, but I'm not sure why. He said I will need it in the 'distant future'. Anyways, back to the story, June 4th was when the bang happened, no one really knew what it was. Some said it was when the world would turn upside down. Others say it was a bunch of nonsense. My family believed in the first one. I believed in the first one. I didn't know that the bang was about to change my whole life, I was only a teenage boy with a tragic sob story after all. I had only two friends and that's how I liked it. One was called Jason Cole the other was called Nyssa Grace. Their parents are also one of the 5 earthlings: Nyssa's dad and Jason's mum. Fortunately, their parents didn't die or go into hiding.

So, on the 4th of June I was just walking with Jason and Nyssa, talking about the usual small talk like who might win the CFL (cyber football league). I thought the Hydras will win. They thought the Argos will win. We were about to play some football, yes, the earth version when Jason said, 'Hey do you guys hear that? '

Nyssa nervously said, 'Hear what?' This wasn't the first time Jason was hearing stuff. Usually when he does hear these voices, something bad happens.

'Yeah Jason, mate, are you ok? Are you sure you want to play; we can take a rest if you want?' I asked.

'No, no, no, I'm fine. Let's play some football, I – I'm sure it's nothing'. Jason protested. Nyssa and I exchanged looks of uncertainty, but we agreed to play. Mainly because convincing Jason to listen is like making a monkey tap dance.

'OK, we'll play, but be careful', Nyssa warned to Jason.

'Sheesh Nyssa you're acting like my mom! I'll be fine', Jason reassured.

We played at the park for about a good hour until Jason had to go. It was just me and Nyssa. We were walking along the road, the sun setting on the orange marshy land making everything look on fire. Until we reached my house, we spoke about science. Nyssa and I loved science, Jason not so much. We could talk about black holes and the big bang for days and still not get bored, for us, well at least me, was the only thing that made me feel close to my parents.

Half an hour later, we reached my house.' See you tomorrow, Diaz. Make sure not to blow up the sun today! 'She joked.

'Ha ha, very funny, that was one time! And stop calling me Diaz!' I protested.

'I'll call you what I want to call you Diaz and that 'one' time almost killed half the population! But on a serious note, take care, OK. I know you don't want to talk about it, but I'm here and so is Jason, you don't have to bottle it all up anymore.' Nyssa said. She was one of the few who knew my secret. I could trust her, and NO before you think about it, I do NOT like her, ok? End of story.

'Jeez Nyssa, you really are starting to sound like Jason's mum. But yea I won't keep any secrets from you guys again. After all, remember the last time I kept a secret from you and Jason?' I asked jokingly.

'Oh yeah, haha, Jason and I almost knocked the Spanish out of you, didn't we? Well anyways, I gotta go now so take care and stay safe, bye', Nyssa replied.

'Yeah, you to Grace. Adios' I said. I turned to see my uncle smiling at the step of the door.

'You've got a really nice girlfriend there sobrino ', my uncle teased.

'She's not my girl- ', I started but then I saw my uncle, raising his eyebrows with a wide grin on his face. 'Ugh, I can't with you now Tio. I have to do some homework! 'I called out as I dashed inside and going to my room. My uncle still leaning against the wall with his grin and gave me a what did I do? – type of look.

My room was pretty small, I had a single bed, a desk with my Asus gen 6 pc with a holographic interface and air waves enabled pc, a shelf overflowing with books and a small tableside lamp. I had no pictures of my parents because when they were hiding, my family destroyed every single picture of them so that if someone raided our house no one would know. The most favourite part of my room was the view. I could see almost all of sector 227 here and the brilliant super sun mars had. There weren't any toys apart from an incredibly old Walkman which was supposedly my dad's. I hadn't played any of the songs yet, why? That's not your business.

I was just cleaning my room until I found my parents' year 6 yearbook of 2019. It was dusty as heck. I looked for my dad's and mum's page and found it a couple of pages to the end. It said:

Leo Diaz: Leo has always been a wonderful student, with lots of ideas, apart from being ridiculously smart he was kind. we know that you will become a wonderful citizen and be amazing in whatever profession you will be in, good luck :)

I couldn't believe it. My dad. He looked like me. He had the same ruffled, jet-black hair, lanky build, and a pair of lopsided glasses. Just like me, but not the eyes. My eyes were like my uncle's. My dad's eyes were startling grey. I didn't want to read on, I was scared. These 4 lines reminded me of them, how- how I watched them die, how I could have stopped it. The whole reason they had to go into hiding was because of me. From a very young age people saw I was a 'genius' or a 'child prodigy'. The government thought I was dangerous. They went after me. They assumed I was with my parents, so they started to go after them. When they realised, I wasn't with them, they killed my parents. All. Because. Of. Me. Reading another 4 lines might just break me. Usually, I don't really have much self- control, but now, I just couldn't make myself do it! I was put the yearbook away but then my uncle came in. He spoke in Spanish; it was my first language after all. He said that the yearbook shouldn't have been opened. His voice cold as steel. I knew I was in trouble. He saw the look on my face and his expression softened then he said 'Look, I know you miss them, I miss them. Looking through these pictures will only make you sad. M-my brother he was a genius. He could solve anything, model student, head boy, he was everything. I have a feeling that you are going to be just like him, if not better. Be strong! Make your padre proud sobrino! Make your mother proud! Make me proud!'. When he said this, I teared up. It was almost like he was saying goodbye. Something was up. I'm not sure what but something was wrong.

And as if right on time, a huge BANG came from outside. My uncle pelted out to see what the problem was. I followed.

As I came out, I saw Nyssa and Jason running towards me. 'Will! What on Mars is that? I was just going to bed until I heard this! What is going on?' exclaimed Jason.

'H-how am I supposed to know! Do I look like a wizard?' I shouted as another bang came from the western side of sector 227. Then just as we started to bicker. Nyssa said 'Cut it out you two! We are about to be a human pancake with all these bangs going on and all you too can talk about is who's a bloody wizard!'

Jason and I started to look at the ground and murmur, getting told of by Nyssa is 10 times worse than getting told of by my uncle, and trust me. You do NOT want to see that. As I was about to reply, a huge meteor came crashing down upon our general area.
