Though not much is know about Hermaphroditus. We know he was the first son of Hermes and the only child of Hermes and Aphrodite.
He was born a very beautiful child. Some say he had a face that rivalled that of a woman's . He took after his mother with blonde hair and blue eyes.
He was one of the Erotes a group of winged gods that represented love that included Anteros, Eros (cupid), Hedylogos, Hermaphroditus, Himeros, Hymenaeus, and Pothos.
He is also referred to as Aphroditus on many accessions.
Hermaphroditus was raised by naiads in the caves of Mount Ida. When he turned the age of fifteen he decided to explore the world. It was however in the woods of Caria that an horrible event happened.
In the woods he encountered a nymph named Salmacis bathing in her pool. Overcame with lust she tried to seduce the young boy(WHO WAS FIFTEEN) but was rejected.
After thinking she left; Hermaphroditus undressed himself to bath in the very pool.
While bathing in the pool, Samalis sprang from hiding behind a tree and forced herself onto him. In his struggles to protect himself; Samalis forcing herself on to him, prayed to the gods for them to never depart. A god(though it is unclear who) hearing her granted her wish and merged them together creating a hermaphrodite (a organism with both female and male body parts).
Over come by grief Hermaphroditus prays to their/his parents Hermes and Aphrodite to make anyone who stepped in the pool suffer the same fate as him so he would not be alone.
This god is described to be the god of intersex and the union of woman and man in marriage.
