What's the lowest you've ever been? Don't answer straight away, think about it.
Was it perhaps a failing grade?
Seeing the weight on the scale increase?
A loved one's death?
Maybe a traumatic incident?
You may no longer be at your lowest, as they say, every low is followed by a high. But what if that high never came? What if that low wasn't your lowest?
That's the feeling that overwhelmed me as I finished Rael's path to sainthood. The book ended with what I thought was the rightful ending, with the death of the villain. Although we found it weird that he died smiling we all celebrated the end of a thorn in the protagonists road to happiness. Then the author released an extra chapter.
A chapter that mocked our celebration, a chapter that started his story.
The story began as it ended, with a smile.
A crazed emperor speared the womb of his concubine, during a spell of madness.
"I did not give you permission to have a child." His voice was eerily calm but the redness in his eyes gave away his madness. A moment later a hint of clarity appeared and his eyes watered as he hugged the dying woman to his chest. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to." He peppered her face with gentle kisses as the warmth escaped her body. She closed her eyes slowly, a peaceful expression painting her face as she went on her way to a better life, hopefully.
His eye twitched as he looked at the peaceful expression gracing her face, one that he had never seen when he was in her presence. He scoffed, pushing her body to the floor and leaving without looking back.
A frightened young maid, watching from behind the door stared at the body of her mistress. Her tears halted at the sight of movement in the dead woman's abdomen. The spear embedded in her womb had sliced the connection between mother and child but the child remained unharmed. This period in his life was, as the author called it, his lucky period.
The babe remained silent as he lay in a pool of his mother's blood.
"A... A blessing, a blessing from the Lord!" She exclaimed, quickly cradling the child in her arms with tears dripping down her face.
The young maid escaped with the babe, hiding in the depths of the slum. This was in the hopes that the emperor would never find them and she was right, he never did find them. However, that didn't stop men with evil intentions from hunting them down.
At the age of 4 the villain's sole guardian was r*ped to death as he stayed hidden in the wardrobe. He couldn't understand it back then, but he felt something was wrong with him as he stared at the soulless body of his guardian. The author recounts this as the point in his life where symptoms of his personality disorder began to manifest.
A numbness in the face of death.
A pitiful child who should be free of worries was struck with an ultimatum a few days later as the hunger ate away at his stomach. He could no longer rely on the woman, he had to do something by himself so that he could live on.
He stumbled towards the bed, reaching into a hollow in the wooden frame. He retrieved the coins he had often seen the maid exchange for food and stared at the feeble number of coins which only amounted to 4 pieces of bread. It lasted him a month, he rationed each piece over a few days, trying to ignore the hunger in his stomach. He suddenly recalled the many times the maid would take him onto the streets to beg and act pitiful.
