TW: stab wounds (dw, i didn't go into much detail)
"Another one, right now?" A voice said from behind the alley way.
Jackie let out a sigh "Alright, I'll be on my way over there." He said, hanging up on strange device. "So many spirits these days, wonder how rowdy this one will be."
He placed the device into his pocket, switching his oar to the other hand before making a boat appear out of nothing, hopping onto it before sailing across the sky, sitting down, waiting to arrive at the destination he was given.
"This is the third one this week, can't ever catch a break.." Jackie sighed, leaning back in his boat, the oar somehow rowing itself.
He wiped his hand over his face, a yawn escaping his mouth as the boat suddenly came to a crashing halt, sending Jackie forward, faceplanting into the boat
" What the bloody 'ell was that for?! God damn boat.. " Jackie snapped at the boat, the oar slapping him in the face in retaliation, a scowl was now plastered on his face.
" Just a fooking warnin' next time you halt to a stop. " He said, rubbing the now red side of his face where the oar paddle had whacked him with a pout, looking over the edge of the boat down upon where the boat had stopped.
" Y'know the drill, hide somewhere where no one'll see you, I'll call when I've got them. " He said, grabbing the ore as he hopped out of the boat.
Landing on the ground with a cloud of mist beneath his feet, he approached the cowering thing in the corner, A soft whimper was heard from it, it seemed to have it's hands over it's head and was rocking back and forth.
" Uhm, hello there sir or ma'am, Are you alright- " Jackie spoke softly, touching the figure in the corner, leading to the thing flinching violently, snapping it's tear stained face around to face Jackie. " Oh thank god someone can see me, this means I can't be dead! " The entity said, clinging onto Jackie for dear life, They seemed to be aged around 9, stab marks stained their body as Jackie examined them as best he could due to them clinging onto the Ferryman.
Jackie managed to get the child to release them from their cling, kneeling down to look at them in the face, Poor thing looked to have been crying for a while.
" What's your name kid? " He said softly to the child.
" A-Aster. "
" Well Aster, how did you end up here? "
" I was going to the shops with my Mum and she told me to wait outside whilst she bought some of her fire sticks, I waited for 20 minutes and got bored so I went on a little walk down the alleyway near the shops, then these men found me and tried to convince me to come with them a-and.. " Aster began to tear up
Jackie didn't know really what to do at the moment, just bringing the child into a well needed hug. Aster tensed as he did this action, before clinging onto Jackie tightly, bursting out crying, hiding his face in his shoulder.
" Okay Aster, I'm going to need you to be a brave boy and close your eyes, I'm going to take you someplace better than this, somewhere where no one can ever hurt you again, is that okay? " Jackie asked the young boy, making circular motions on the child's back to try and calm them down.
" No! I don't wanna go anywhere without my mum! I can't leave her like papa did or she'll be really upset! " Aster protested, still clinging onto Jackie for dear life.
Jackie was trying his best not to tear up with this kid, he felt sorry for the poor child, he had barely lived his life and it wasn't really the best start, he just needed to find a way to get the child onto his boat and to safety in the astral realm.
" Well where I'm taking you, you'll be able to see your mother and father everyday, you'll get so many hugs, the best story times and nothing could hurt you. " Jackie spoke with a strained voice, trying his best not to cry infront of this child.
" . . . And mummy won't be upset anymore? " Aster spoke. "She'll be the happiest woman alive. " Said Jackie.
After a moment of silence, Aster gave a nod to Jackie, signalling he was ready to go. Nodding his head, he let go of the child from the hug, taking hold of their hand, taking one last glance down at them before the mist surrounded the two, lifting them up to the moonlit sky.
Jackie gave a sharp whistle, the ferryboat appearing a matter of seconds later as he took his oar out, allowing the child to go first.
Aster was hesitant, but soon enough, he stepped onto the boat, sitting down on it as Jackie followed, The man hummed a lullaby as he began to row the boat, a thick mist entrapping the ferryboat as he did, soon enough the two seemed to be flowing slowly on a river of souls travelling to the afterlife.
" Are you sure mummy and daddy are going to be alright.? " Aster asked, his body slowly turning translucent as the transition was starting slowly but surely.
" I'm sure they'll be perfectly fine now that you're safe.. " Jackie spoke, getting a nod of the head from the young boy before their body became a pure beam of light, swirling around the ferryman and his boat before falling into the river of souls like a waterdrop.
Jackie observed the souls, his face red as some tears slipped from his eyes, god this was the hardest thing about the job, having to lie to the children, but it had to be done so they weren't in pain anymore.
Soon enough his odd device started emitting a shrill beep, causing the ferryman to tense from the noise, quickly grabbing it out of his pocket to see what was the issue.
His face fell from a saddened expression to a somewhat angry
