The sun rose on a new day, Jacoby lifted his head reluctantly off of the desk, looking down at the papers and open books in front of him, tired from his continued work, what he had been working on for years now, trying to find someone

a soft knock on the door, Jacoby stood and rubbed any evidence he had just been sleeping off his face and opened the door

"Hello?" He asked worriedly "oh hello! I wanted to give you this!" The elderly woman from the day before spoke at the door, he then opened the door completely and saw the woman holding a fruitcake neatly wrapped in plastic.

"Oh- man- thanks- you wanna come
In?" He asked, "yes! If you don't mind" she said timidly "of course not, come in" Jacoby said while opening the door to let her in.

"This home is very old, yes?" she questioned the taller man "I guess so, i'm not too sure my friend had found it" he sighed "your friend, hm? Is that who that is on the wall?" she asked "no that's my other friend, me and that other friend used to be in the picture before..but something happened to it" he said that last part a bit quietly.

The woman realized it was a touchy subject, "oh my apologies for asking." she placed the cake in her hands on a table "don't sweat it" he smiled. They chatted for a while, he found out she was the wife to the grouchy old man from the previous day, and she had 3 children that were also there with her

-------------------------------------------

"Your nice to talk to" Jacoby said as he stood with her at the door "my goodness same to you!" she smiled kindly "I'm always here" he smiled, the woman chuckled "i'll keep that in mind! But be on my way home now!" she spoke stepping down the porch steps "bye!" Jacoby called, she waved goodbye in response

Jacoby turned and head back inside, he looked at the weathered walls, old floorboards, and the rotting wood at the corners of the walls, his life was dangerously close to miserable, with the lack of sleep and food, he couldn't even afford a decently livable home, he sighed and head out to the porch, sitting on the old rocking chair and opening a small locket attached to a silver chain

He smiled, his eyes burning a little as he looked at the familiar faces in the locket, the inside lined thinly with gold paint, remembering faces of the two he'd lost, kept him searching. In that moment, he remembered that day, one his mind wouldn't let him forget.

---------------------------------------------

"Adema! What are you burning?!" maven ran to the kitchen as adema was cooking, "it's not me i'm not burning anything!" She said frantically as the household fire alarm blared throughout the house, Jacoby reached up and turned off the fire alarm "of course it's you ema, where else would the smoke be coming from?" Jacoby questioned "i don't kn-" the short girl stopped mid sentence to let out a gasp, looking towards their living room, an enormous flame was in their home, blocking the exit.

The three were shocked but moved quickly maven hurried to open the kitchen window, but once she had gotten it open, she found it was barricaded, she looked to Jacoby who had come from the other side of the house "the windows are blocked!" Jacoby shouted "we know!" Maven huffed in panic.

"Wait our painting! I need to get it!" Adema shouted, covering her mouth with cloth to protect from the smoke "wait ema stop!" Jacoby shouted, running towards her. He stopped at the flame, but being able to see adema "ema!!....ADEMA!" Maven shouted, then began to cough, they were inhaling too much smoke, she looked around to find a way out, but there were no signs of escape, until suddenly, one of the walls collapsed, a big way out.

Maven was still trying to find a way into the flames to get to adema, but she was just getting burned, "maven we need to go!" Jacoby shouted to her, while maven was on her knees, trying to at least get a glimpse of the younger girl, but to nothing. "we can't leave her!" Maven shouted, but the reality of it hit, and she cursed, running out with Jacoby.

A minute or two pass, and there are already people gathered by the house, murmuring concerns and shock. They had so much land, it took a while for even neighbors to get there, and even when they did, what could they do?

Jacoby and maven stand feet from the open wall, staring in shock while maven feels her heart only continue to sink, her eyes burning as she stared at the flames, waiting for the smallest glimpse of adema. Jacoby was turned away, unable to look back at the ruin of their home, and adema's tomb.

"...Help..!" Adema's voice was heard faintly from inside, reaching out, not being able to see, maven and Jacoby rushed towards the sound, and even saw her face as she approached the opening.

But she had to die today.

A piece of the home fell and impaled adema, shock and pain filled her expression as her body went limp, blood soaked the soil of the ground, the blades of grass slowly catching fire as the blood and fire spread.

The crackling of the fire went silent

The two stared in shock, screams and gasps erupted from the small crowd behind them, maven was unable to move, not even to wipe the tears that flowed endlessly. Jacoby's eyes were shut tight, too cowardly to even look at the girl bleeding to death infront of them.

At least it was quick

Finally, maven stood, her hands trembling as she did. Jacoby heard her take a step, and looked to her, only to see her walking steadily into the woods, Jacoby followed after her, grabbing her shoulder to drop her, but she shoved him off without even a look, he called her name and begged her to stop, but she never did, she wasn't going to. Her stride was determined and forced.

He followed and followed, until the sun began to set. He had pushed her, pulled her, yelled, cried, begged, demanded. Nothing.

Looking in her expression he saw nothing. Well he should have looked harder. He couldn't take it, he grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her

"What is wrong with you?! Listen to me!"
He shouted, only to be met by a strong shove, sending him into a tree and knocking him out.

Hours- hours later, he awoke to the sound of crickets, the sky black and scattered with beautiful stars, it almost distracted him. He stumbled to his feet, dizzy, he touched the back of his head and felt the dry blood in his hair-

Maven

He ran in the direction he saw her leave, but who was he kidding, it had been hours.

She was gone.

---------------------------------------------

Jacoby opened his tired eyes and looked back to the locket in his hands, smiling a little a the thought of them,
He stood and head back inside, back to reading and searching

For maven.
