Chapter 2
Kat was a bit excited as she sat on the plane flying with Captain America to go to the UK. Even before Kat became a cyborg, her family didn't do much traveling so this was all new to her. Steve had helped her gain an ID and a passport so Kat could fly if she needed to.
Nevertheless, Kat knew the reason they were flying to the UK today; Steve had wanted to see Peggy. When he had gotten out of the ice, he found lots of files regarding everyone he knew from the military; the Howling Commandos, and the three people that would form SHIELD after the war. Most of them were dead now, and Kat knew Steve felt more alone than ever with his friends and comrades gone. Only one of them was still alive; Peggy Carter, who was living in a retirement home in Winchester, UK.
After the plane landed, Steve and Kat took a bus to the retirement home where Peggy was now living. As they went inside and approached the front desk, the lady at the desk was stunned to see Captain America before her. He gave her a polite smile and said, "Hi, I'm Steve Rogers and this is Katania Lavelark. We're here to see Peggy Carter."
The woman nodded and signed them both in before leading them to where Peggy's room was. The nurse knocked on the door and then entered to let Peggy know she had guests. The two heroes went inside and immediately Peggy's face lit up at seeing Steve. She certainly had gotten older but that was expected.
"Oh Steve.....look at you. It's so good to see you. Who is your friend?"
Steve smiled and gestured Kat to join him. "Peggy this is Katania, Fury assigned her to me as a protégé of sorts. Goes by 'Spectrum'."
Kat came up to Peggy and gently shook her hand. "Call me Kat, ma'am. It's nice to meet you. Steve has told me a lot about you."
"Oh I'm sure he has. Please, come in and sit."
Both Steve and Kat took a seat next to her bed and Kat took a look around the room. It was a quaint room, and on the dresser were pictures of Peggy with her two children, a boy and a girl. It seemed that Peggy got to find happiness in life after all, despite being hurt at losing Steve as she seemed in the reel Kat saw her in.
"You should be proud of yourself Peggy." Steve talking to Peggy pulled Kat from her thoughts and made her focus on the conversation at hand.
After a glance at the photos of her family, Peggy looked back to Steve and said, "Mm. I have lived a life. My only regret is that you didn't get to live yours." She noticed that Steve still looked a little sad and she asked, "What is it?"
"For as long as I can remember I just wanted to do what was right. I guess I'm not quite sure what that is anymore. And I thought I could throw myself back in and follow orders, serve. It's just not the same."
Instead of a completely serious tone, Peggy could be heard chuckling lightly. "You're always so dramatic."
Kat chimed in with a light chuckle of her own. "Right? That's what I keep telling him; the old man doesn't have to always be so dramatic." Steve cast Kat a glance that said 'watch it' but still smiled.
Peggy then continued, "Look, you saved the world. We rather...mucked it up."
Steve was quick to correct Peggy, as he knew she always did the best she could. "You didn't. Knowing that you helped found SHIELD is half the reason I stay."
"And I'm grateful he stuck around. Honestly, I couldn't imagine having anyone else as a teacher; I'm honored to be taught by Captain America. I learn to control my powers and a little hand to hand combat so I don't always have to rely on my power; he's amazing."
