Chapter One

The distant sounds of hollow cries and terrified screams reached your ears as you stood deathly still, your face set in forced stone. Your fingers were entangled around each other in front of you, clasped so tightly they hurt. You glanced over at the pedestal not a foot to your right, at the urn that housed his finger. You knew who he was, you knew what he was. Yet you remained there despite the screaming warnings in your head to run. It was your duty to remain there, no matter what you heard, no matter what you saw.

You had spent all your life preparing for this moment. You had never seen the sky, nor the birds or sea. Never experienced anything but these dirty stone walls, an eternity of waiting and stolen moments in dark corners, away from unwanted eyes. You had very little idea of what awaited outside of these walls and solemnly, in this moment, you wondered if you ever would.

The frightening sounds drew closer now, coming from right above you. You looked up to the ceiling, as though expecting blood to seep through the cracks and spill downwards. It had always been a possibility that it would end like this, end in death. They had taught you that since you were a child. Though dedicated to Sukuna as you were, the covenant knew that their beloved King of Curses did not care for their lives. Quick to anger, quicker to strike. He felt no empathy or pity. No love or happiness. Sukuna knew only death, dealt only in strength, in pain. It was his path, the life he had chosen and, the life he had unwittingly chosen for you aswell. A dark, lonely life.

You clutched your hands tighter, the singular lightbulb that hung above your head scattering its dim light across the grey stone floor in a flurry of yellow. This room was small, empty apart from you, the urn, and a small staircase behind you, leading to the exit. An exit that had haunted you every moment you stood here. An exit that called to you, but you had never dared to cross. You had remained here, buried away from the light, waiting.

The sounds above you died abruptly, causing you to shudder. It would not take him long. There were only three rooms on this level and, you were surely the last one left. Left alone with this beast. Your breath came heavier now, a sheen of anxious sweat glossing your skin, damping the long black dress you wore.

Yet your fear was entangled with excitement, anxiety overlapping anticipation. They were one with another, coiling around you like serpents, threatening to crush you. The idea that death was coming, the idea that he was coming. You couldn't control your internally coiling emotions; you couldn't understand them. You didn't think it mattered.

Suddenly the door burst open, falling to the floor with a loud crack. There he stood, in its shadow, looming over the room. Your heart stilled as you dared to glance at him, not long enough to be noticed, but enough to see. He was more beautiful than they had said, as though carved by the Gods themselves. You glimpsed his hard jawline, the deep midnight tattoos that surrounded crimson red eyes.

His feet gently tapped against the ground as he took a few steps forward. You battled with yourself not to look back up at him. Another few steps and your breath hitched. You willed your wildly beating heart to calm, focusing on the floor.

He drew even closer and you lost your inner battle. Your eyes met, and his lips upturned in a devilish smile, highlighting his elongated canines. You saw the blood caked across his clothing, spluttered across his face. The blood of your brothers and sisters who had spent a thousand years protecting Sukuna's finger. Would this also be your fate?
