"Atty. Joseph, have you checked the file of Safe Structures. They have been demanding for action these past few days." Another lawyer in the firm asked. Joseph, a well-known corporate lawyer of Firmado, home of legal attorneys in the Philippines. "Yeah, I did, I was about to print it out, the meeting's tomorrow right?" He asked back. Both of the colleagues talked for minutes before standing up in their places.
The man grabbed a cup of coffee as he scanned the printed out files. The coffee brewed in perfection calmed his mind in distress. In a span a few weeks he had a workload to do, bunch of cases, meetings, researches and all other work that a public defender has to do. Work hard to earn shit, work hard to live, and work hard to be successful, the man was all the things. As he stepped into the world of adulthood all he did was to work and yet he never complained.
He placed the papers inside his briefcase and departed away from his cluttered office. The hardwood floors of the hallway greeted him, everyone was occupied with files and resume's in their hands. The firm was progressing and scouting newly graduated lawyers around. Some people around him greeted him and smiled while some ignored as they are immersed with their very own work. The busy environment was no uncommon thing to him as he is a busy man himself as well.
As he exit the building, he saw a couple nearby the parking space, it reminded him his bitter-sweet experience when he was younger. The recollection of memory flashes through his eyes. His promises, her promises, all the times that they had shared. He sighed as he entered his car, sluggishly flopped down his leather seat. Tossing the briefcase on the seat beside him, buckling the safety belt, he then started the engine and carefully stepped on the gas. The irony was riding with him, the gloomy and gray skies, clouds filled with water waiting at the right moment to pour, the blue serenade playing at the radio station, and the feeling of missing someone. The gush of sadness never left him throughout the ride.
The man rose up even before the sun did. Preparing for the day big day ahead where he doesn't know what to expect, the young man prepared his and his pet's breakfast. He grizzled bacon, fried eggs and rice, before brewing his coffee. He again, spread out the printed out memos from yesterday and reviewed them once again. The project he is handling at the moment is a big opportunity for his firm, he can't mess nor miss it. After his daily morning routine, he dressed up in one his best professional outfit, a light blue buttoned up shirt, a dark blue slacks and a matching blazer, a chestnut oxford leather shoes and his Rolex. With a coffee and a briefcase in hand, he then grabbed his keys and ventured out to work.
The man sped fast toward the highways and headed towards the direction of the said company. His tires screeched as he parked the car down the parking lot, he fixed his shirt wrinkled shirt, patted down his blazer before putting it on and smiling to himself to convince him he'll be fine. With a prayer in mind he went out to perform his duties as an expert.
Safe Structures is an American based Engineering team that had expanded chains here in the country, with his help the company would be legally known. The building has a western vibe in it, to his surprise the reception area of the office was empty except for the receptionist. With the other male's help he find his way to the conference room. The moment his foot stepped unto the room he can't help but for his jaw to fall. He was stupefied, frozen and stuck to his place. He can't believe his own eyes, he can't believe their eyes would meet neither to see each other.
"Luna." He whispered.
"Luna you know Atty. Joseph?" One of the engineer in the room asked.
"Yeah, I once knew him, an acquaintance perhaps."
There's something about the words that escaped the woman's mouth that made the man felt defeated, again. He felt like his heart was pierced with an ice pick, cold and sharp, deadly as it can be. He stood there for a second or two, before introducing himself to the engineers, and to the past herself. With the sudden switch from him to his professional side he beamed a smile hiding the pain.
