"Are you ok?" I asked. Amorette looked up at me, shocked. "Eden?!" She asked. She could hardly speak, she was panting so hard. I was very skilled at running, as I had been in track last year. For as long as I can remember, I've been good at running. I've never been sure why. I wasn't very tired, due to that fact. "Shhh...lay down," I told her. She did as she was told, still panting. I started at her dead in the eyes. "347. 347!?" How did you get 308 times smarter OVERNIGHT?!" Once she caught her breath, she stammered "I-I don't know! It all just..happened!" I didn't know what to say to that. So I went with my rage. "All just happened?! You were at 39 yesterday!" Amorette looked hurt. She looked down, and buried her head it her knees. Her back went up and down. I could tell she was crying.
I felt like a horrible friend. I was so blinded by rage and jealousy that I didn't even think about how Amorette was feeling at the time. Confused? Concerned? Proud? I couldn't tell, but I believe it's mostly confussion. Nobody in the history of the world has ever gotten a level more than 53. She had gotten 294 levels higher than that. I sat down beside her and said comforting words, though I don't think they helped. She was usually feisty, sassy, and cocky. This wasn't Amorette. This was a broken mess of tears.
A few days later
Amorette and I had found a place to camp, because we knew if we went back home, the government would take Amorette and do some sort of weird brain experiments on her. I couldn't let that happen. Except we didn't have much of a chance. We were only 12. One of us, a carmel- haired jewel-eyed genius, the other a scrawny black-haired kid with almost-sapphire eyes. Our camp was a small cave on the coast of Elluma. It was bug-infested and dirty, but it was he best we had. We'd take daily trips to pick berries and fruits. I went out to the grocery store (because Amorette couldn't for obvious reasons) and bought new cloths, bread, and other necessities. I had used my lunch money, and got more from the ATM outside the store. We were good for now, and I was glad.
