I Just Fell Out of Bed

Ash

I have been staying with Noctis and Braden and their family for a week now. They are definitely...weird. Most of the people are out of the house in the mornings and don't come back until later in the afternoon most days. Everyone seems the cease all conversations when I walk in the room and the only people who try to speak with me are Braden, Noctis and Cal. I haven't had any signs of something happening so far and to say I am relieved would be an understatement. I think I can finally go home.

I just finished getting dressed and I already know everyone will be out of the house, so I begin packing my things. I haven't gotten around to buying anything yet so it all fits in the same bag I came in.

I reach out to my door handle to unlock it when a searing pain spreads through my back and shoulders. I let out a scream of pain as I fall to my knees with my hands on the ground. What's going on? Is this it? Am I becoming a monster? Another scream rips from my mouth at the pain intensifies and it feels like my back is tearing open. Tears are flowing shamelessly down my cheeks at the pain begins dulling to a throbbing.

I take a few deeps breaths before trying to stand up. I feel a heavy weight on my back that makes me feel lighter than usual. I turn my head slightly before screaming loudly. What the fuck is going on? I have...wings?

Sprouting from my back are pure white wings with an orange hue in the crevices. I just stare in awe before a knocking shakes me from my trance.

"Ash? Ash, open up. Are you okay? I heard screaming. Oh god, please tell me you aren't dead. As...." I cut Braden off.

"I'm fine Braden, I just fell out of bed. Don't come in, I'm not...dressed yet."

"Okay um, sorry for freaking out."

"It's fine."

I hear his footsteps fade and I make my way to standing. I walk slowly to the bathroom and look at myself in the mirror. My eyes flash orange for a moment before going back to my normal green. My face is free from any blemishes and my blonde hair turns into a raven black. I take in my wings. The look fluffy but deadly and they are huge! The tips of the wings reach the bottom of my calves.

"Okay Ash, this is happening. You have...those now and you have no idea what to do? Are they permanent? Am I dead? Oh god, I'm dead aren't I? Why me!? Oh no, what about John? He's all alone, how could I have left him all alone?" I rant and start to hyperventilate.

I feel dizzy so I close my eyes and my back hits the wall. I slide down the wall and hug my knees as I take deep breaths to relax myself. I feel my heart rate and breathing calm down and I stand back up, shocked to see no wings there. Was it just a dream? No, no it was definitely real. I need to leave this place.

I walk out of the bathroom and pick up my duffle bag, unlocking my door. As I open it, I make my way downstairs, towards the front door. I almost make it out before I hear Noctis call my name.

"Where are you headed to Ash?" I notice her eyeing my new black hair.

"I am going back home," I truthfully tell her.

"What happened?"

"What do you mean?" I ask.

"Why are you going home now of all times and why are you trying to sneak out?" She's onto me.

"It's just time for me to go home and I didn't want anyone trying to change my mind."

"Do you want a ride home?" She offers.

"No, I could use the walk," I admit. I want to try out this whole wings thing.

Noctis nods and then walks out of sight. I turn and open the front door wide, walking out towards the forest.
