"We don't need to interfere. Like I said, those two were meant to be together."

The white sand formed small dents as two 8 year old children ran around barefoot. They've been running around for quite a while, yet neither seemed to show the slightest hint of weariness.

"When I catch you I'm going to bury you in the sand!" A little boy yelled as he chased his bestfriend on the sand. He's been running for 10 minutes straight, trying to catch her so he would get back at her for pouring sand on his face when he was asleep. His messy, dark brown hair flew around his grinning face as he pumped his tired legs to go faster. His hazel eyes glistened with mischief as he thought of different ways to give out his revenge on her.

"You'll never catch me!" The little girl ahead of him yelled back, her high-pitched voice echoing in the cool wind. Her face was red and puffy due to lack of oxygen, yet she ran giddily as if she's never known what tired is. Her light blonde hair gleamed under the setting sun's light, making it appear as if each strand of her hair was a different shade of gold.

"Oh yes I will," He chuckled quietly from behind her. He was catching up pretty fast, but he wasn't going to let her know that. It was going to be a surprise tackle. Two steps from behind her, he flung his arms in front of him and jumped towards her small body. She screamed as the two of them fell on the sand and giggled wildly as she tried to pry away from under him.

"No fair," she argued, pouting her lips as he held her wrists behind her.

The little boy merely chuckled and let her go. "Loser," he laughed as he stood up and held his hand out for her. She stuck her tongue out and pushed herself up, brushing the sand from her dress. She gave him a dirty look and hastily walked away in the opposite direction, feeling slightly upset that she wasn't able to outrun him like she planned.

"Hey, come back!" He called and she heard him jog towards her. They walked side by side in silence, not knowing what to say to each other.

Suddenly, a voice rang out and sliced the silence that had formed. "Josh! Annie! Dinner's ready!"

The two turned around towards a large beach house not far from them and saw a woman smile down on them.

"Coming!" The children chorused and the woman chuckled as she re-entered the house.

The two children began walking back towards the house and despite the distance, they could smell the sweet aroma of grilled burgers. Their little tummies were growling slightly in hunger as silence poured over them once again, yest neither wanted to speak first.

"Ow!" Annie cried and suddenly stopped walking. She held one foot up and her eyes widened as she watched blood seep through the small cut.

"What happened?" Josh walked towards her and held her waist to keep her balanced on one foot.

She shook her head. "Stupid glass," she muttered, kicking the small yet sharp fragment on the sand.

Deep concern etched in Josh's face. He instantly forgot their unspoken agreement of silence. "Can you walk?"

Annie bit her lip to keep herself from bursting in tears. She wasn't going to cry in front of Josh. He may be her bestfriend, but he's still a boy. A boy who could use this embarassing moment against her in the future. Annie breathed deeply. Her foot was stinging so badly she could hardly move it.

Josh took the silence as a yes and knelt in front of her with his back to her. "Climb on," he said.

Annie stared at his back then at her foot, debating whether she should pretend to be brave and walk or just give up and let him carry her. The stinging pain in her foot and the taunting scent of the burgers overpowered her. She was hungry and hurt, and she knew she had to give in. She carefully climbed on his back and heard him puff heavily.
