You were sitting patiently in the bar, tapping your fingers on the counter, listening carefully to each tick of the clock. You weren't particularly excited, you were more anxious that something was going to come along and ruin your date.
You've known Colt for a long time. He's been the sheriff for years, and he was particularly nice to you when you first moved into town about a year ago. Even though you suspected something was between him and Shelly, you couldn't shake the thought that you and him might have a chance.
But why bother thinking these things? Colt was nice of course, but he never particularly had his heart set on you. He was the sherrif, that's all. And you were boring, plain old you. No adventures, no risks, no nothing. You had to change that.
Finally, through the soft music playing through the bar, you hear the door open far behind you. He was finally here. All the worry thats been building up in your stomach becomes overwhelming. "What if he doesn't like me? What if I'm wasting my time?" despite these thoughts, you took a deep breath and smiled when Colt approached and sat in the barstool beside you.
"Y/N! Fancy meeting you here!" he joked. You chuckled a little. That was another thing you loved about Colt besides his adventurousness- the way he made you laugh so easily. And how he made you blush even with his horrible pick-up lines. You've seen him in this bar a few times actually. While he was off duty he would sometimes come here with his friends Shelly and... whatever that little cactus' name is. And you were always there alone, not wallowing in sadness at the corner of a bar, just sitting and watching the latest game of brawl ball on the tv that hung on the wall.
But while you didn't go particularly to see him, colt always happened to be there when you were. Back then you two weren't exactly friends, a polite "hello" was your only exchange, but coming to that bar, always expecting to see each other- there was something safe; something intimate about that.
"It took you long enough to get here!" you scolded playfully. You took a moment to look at his outfit. A Hawaiian print shirt and dress pants. A lot different from the usual sheriff uniform you see him in. Either way, you're glad you didn't feel underdressed.
The first round of drinks, the two of you talked a bit.
"I swear, those bandits are a pain in the neck! last time those guys made me fall down a well!" Colt complained. You couldn't help but smile in amusement. Colt rolled his eyes playfully. "Of course all this stuff sounds simple to you"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that being a sheriff is a lot to handle."
"Really? I bet I could handle whatever those bandits throw at me."
colt laughed and ordered another round. "Really? No offense Y/N, but my job takes a lot more than confidence."
You thought for a moment. "What if that's what I need? Some adventure, Some danger? Maybe being a sheriff is the perfect way to do that."
The second round, you talked about your pasts.
"I grew up in a small town" you began "Nothing much ever happened there. When I grew up I always wanted to get out of that town and find some adventure. so I came here." Colt looked at you with curious eyes. "But... nothing really feels different. It all feels dull no matter where I go." you sighed and looked at him.
"Wow" Colt couldn't think of a better response, which kind of amused you. "Well my life wasn't much different, it was a bit dull for me too until my family moved here. My grandfather was the head sheriff of this town, and I always wanted to be like him." This suprised you. He had such a noble reason for being a sheriff. All you wanted was to get out of your daily routine.
The third round, you were both quiet.
The music continued to play. You both sat at the bar in an awkward silence.
"Another round?" you suddenly heard a robotic voice say. It was the barkeep, and it caught you both off guard. "No thanks" Colt said politely.
After a few minutes, Colt finally asked, "Were you serious earlier?"
"About what?"
"That sheriff stuff."
"Well... I guess I've always been a bit interested in being a sheriff. But you might be right... I can't handle it." you said sadly.
Colt laughed a little "I was joking! I mean, with a bit of training, I think you would make a great sherrif!" You smiled and turned your barstool to face him.
"I've been needing some adventure lately."
"That's good, there's gonna be plenty of it now!”
"... You know, this will be like the old times."
"Old times?"
"When we used to see each other at this bar all the time. We barely spoke, but it was almost like we already knew each other."
Colt smiled. "Yeah, it was nice seeing you so often. And when you're a sheriff, I'll be certain to see you. That makes it even better. His voice softened.
You blushed, and suddenly, without thinking, you kissed his cheek. Well, you tried to. Most of the contact was made with his sideburn. Still it was nice. You both laughed, and Colt kissed your hand in return.
"I can't wait to see you everyday." you remarked.
"Right back at ya, Y/N"
