“Khloe Hastings, where the hell are you?!”
This was the moment I had been dreading. I knew that once I got onto that plane, there was no turning back. I had spent all my savings on this trip, taken a handful of money from my college funds and high-tailed it out of Chicago without another thought. Of course, at the time I was thrilled that I was actually doing something with my life instead of studying boring law, like my mother and father had wanted me to. If they wanted another successful lawyer to take up the family job, it could be my darling twin sister- the Golden Child, Kristina. Hands down, they handed everything to her on a silver platter. But me…I had to work for it. And right now, that's exactly what I was doing.
Except, for something else. Something different. I didn’t want to be stuck, falling into the web my mother and father were already in. I wasn’t the good twin, Kristina was. Yet my mother and father always looked up to me to take up the family business.
Ha! Like that’s ever going to happen.
I wanted to be known. Even more successful than they were, because more than anything, I just wanted to sing. Of course, my parents were against it. They said “ambition and talent gets you nowhere, do what runs in your blood”. Well that’s crappy advice to tell your daughter who was only six years old at the time, if you ask me!
So right now, as my father was yelling at me through the phone, I was in the middle of ordering my coffee from Starbucks in New York. Yes I said it, New York.
I smiled at the man who handed me my cup and slid a ten dollar note over the counter before taking a seat at the back of the café. Casually, I let out a sigh of relief and took a small sip of my hot drink.
“Are you even listening to me?!” Dad screamed on the other end of my phone.
“I’m sorry, what were you saying, Daddy?” I said with a smirk, just to piss him off. And it worked like a charm, because I could hear his teeth grinding together.
“I will get your sister to fly over there and get you home, you hear me?” he spat.
I slipped a little more from my coffee. “Hm, sure, Daddy. Do you even know where I am?” Judging by the silence, I knew he didn’t. That made me laugh, for sure. “I’m in New York. New. York, Daddy. Cost a hefty fortune to get here so fast, too.”
“Don’t take this situation too lightly, Khloe. You will come home and finish law school, alright. Your mother will book a hotel for you and Kristina will be there in the morning to collect you.” My father used the “lawyers’ voice” to make me feel guilty and cower. However it didn’t work.
“No need,” I said happily, “I’ve already got a place. And don’t bother about sending over Kristina. She’ll just come back empty handed, Daddy. Can’t stop me now. I’m legally an adult. Give everyone my love, bye.”
“Are you listening to yourself?! You’re setting yourself up for disaster! Singing won’t get you a good husband and a family! I should know, I had-“
“A dream once, yeah I know. But this is my life,” I told him sternly, “Love you, Daddy. Bye.” I ended the call quickly and stood up. I brushed the back of my jeans off and wheeled my small suitcase out of Starbucks.
Checking my watch, I had exactly ten minutes to get back to the bus stop before my new roomie picked me up.
~ Flash Back ~
Dear Khloe,
I’ve cleared out a temporary room for you in my house and would be so glad if you ended up coming to stay with me a while. Don’t worry, I’m not some creepy dude that wants to murder you. Callie can make sure of it. Tell me when your flight is and I’ll pick you up so we can meet in person. If you want someone to come with me - I was thinking, maybe Callie – then that’s fine. Can’t wait to meet you,
~River
I smiled at the e-mail and reread it just in case I missed anything out before. If I was correct, my parents and Kristina didn’t know about my plan to run away to New York for a couple of months and live with one of my friend’s friend.
Yes, he was a boy. And no, I hadn’t met him before. But Callie would be there on my first day anyway. Well, that’s what she promised.
She hadn’t exactly been returning my calls. But that was okay. If I got in contact with her before my flight, which was two nights away, then everything would turn out just fine.
With a smile, I begun typing my reply to River,
River,
My flight is on Thursday morning, and I will arrive in New York at around nine o’clock. Do you need my cellphone number, just in case? I think I might have yours, so I’ll just text you. Anyway, don’t bother about Callie. I know self-defence so watch out, if you do try to attack me. See you then,
Khloe.
~ Flash Back Over ~
The streets where I ended up were louder than they were around Starbucks and everyone seemed to be important looking and suited up. I bit my bottom lip, feeling out of place. I looked at the passing woman, taking in her expensive designer brand make-up, shoes and jewellery, not to mention that beautiful dress she wore. Then, I looked at myself - ripped jeans and an old scruffy baseball t-shirt I got from my beloved cousin, Caleb. My long dark auburn hair cascaded down my back elegantly. So I guess that was a plus to my appearance, right?
After waiting for a few moment, I stood on my toes and ran my eyes over the large crowd of people, searchingly. But of course, I didn’t know what the hell River looked like so I had no idea what or who to look for.
Sighing, I gave up and just fished my phone out of my pocket. I scrolled threw my contacts and stopped at River’s name. My thumb hovered over the call button for a few seconds when my phone belted out “I Just Had Sex” by Akon and The Lonely Islands.
I glanced up and noticed a few people staring, before my cheeks went a little pink. I answered and pressed the phone to my ear.
“Hello?” I said a little too quickly.
“Khloe?” A deep, sexy voice said. In a way, I kind of liked the way my name came from his mouth.
“River?” I breathed. “Where are you? I can’t see you anywhere.” I slapped my thighs in anticipation and let out a huff.
“I think I see you?” he said, his voice a little hopeful.
“Really?” My eyebrows knitted together and I ran my fingers through my hair. “Because I don’t see y---“ My voice trailed off as I felt someone tap on my shoulder.
I slowly turned around and looked up. My jaw dropped and my legs were like jelly. I had to try my hardest not to let my phone slip through my fingers.
I stared up at the man who stood before me with a sexy smirk, holding his phone to his ear. “Surprise,” he said.
