The Tachibana household seemed to constantly be in chaos, particularly during the summer months when all three kids were at home nearly every day. Himari tried to spend as little time there as possible, because of that very reason.
Itaru, her eleven year old brother, was currently screaming at the top of his lungs at Himeko, her older sister. Himeko had taken the remote from him, claiming seniority, as she flipped the channel from some anime he'd been watching to a foreign drama.
"Give it back!" Itaru shouted, trying to snatch the remote back from Himeko.
Himeko merely leaned further back on the couch, holding it over her head and out of Itaru's reach, "Go play outside or something."
"No, I was watching it first!"
"God, you're so annoying—" Himeko was cut off when Itaru's hand slipped and hit his sister right in the face. "Itaru!" she screamed, roughly pushing him off of her.
"Give me the remote!" he screamed, red in the face. His nostrils were flared and his thin arms were crossed, what would be a scary glare resting on his face if not for the baby fat that still gathered at his cheeks.
Himeko, however, was all sharp jawlines and dark, narrowed eyes— her glare was as scary as Itaru wished his was. "No, you little shit, now piss off!"
"What's with the language?" Himeka, Himari's mother, asked with furrowed brows and a small frown on her pale face. She had been walking down the hall, laundry basket hooked under her arm, when she heard the commotion and peaked her head into the living room.
Immediately, both Himeko and Itaru started yelling about how awful the other was and how they deserved the remote.
Himari sat off to the side, alone, on the sofa with her knees up under her and her sketchbook in her lap. She had been drawing one of the prettier scenes from the anime Itaru was watching. Now, she was grimacing, hoping that her siblings would stop being so loud soon.
As their argument continued, escalating all the way to a full on screaming match with Himeka, Himari abruptly stood up. Whispering a small, "I'm going to Taka-chin's," she gathered her sketchbook, phone, and small purse. Then, after slipping on her shoes in the genkan, she was walking out of her nicely air conditioned home and into the hot, dry summer air.
Miyagi was experiencing a heat wave like nothing it had ever seen before; even just stepping out of her house had caused sweat to break out at Himari's temple. Everyone was locked in their homes, enjoying the air conditioning, so the streets and sidewalks were empty. Even the animals seemed to have had enough of the horrid weather, because there wasn't a bird, or rodent in sight.
"Yo, Hima!" Oikawa Takara, Himari's best friend since childhood, exclaimed after opening her front door. The sixteen year-old was much shorter than Himari, standing at around five foot four, or around one hundred sixty two centimeters, so she had to look up at Himari, who was a solid four inches taller than her. There was a wide grin on Takara's lightly tanned face, as she stepped out of the doorway, "Come on. It's ridiculous out there."
"Thank you," Himari said with a little smile, stepping inside the Oikawa household and basking in the cool air. "I'm sorry. I should have told you I was coming—"
Takara rolled her chocolate brown eyes and gave Himari a little shove, "Like it matters. God knows I've been bored all day." Takara laced her hands together behind her head, giving no mind to Himari, who was slipping off her shoes, as she began to walk down the hall and into her bedroom.
"I thought you and Tooru-san were going to meet your older sister today," Himari said, head tilting slightly.
Takara sighed, collapsing onto her bed and staring up at the ceiling. She scrunched up her nose, "Yeah, but aniki's been crying like a baby all day."
