𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐬;

L. A TRAFFIC IS the least of my worries on the drive to school today. I have a biology test and barely studied. If I get a lower than a C, my parents will murder me.

I have my notes sitting in my lap while I'm sitting in this traffic. It is practically bumper to bumper. I sigh and take out my phone, there's no way I'm making it to school in time.

I press my mom's contact and the line rings for a minute.

"Charli, what's wrong?"

"Hi mommy, I'm stuck in some really heavy traffic can you call the school and tell them I'm gonna be late."

"Just great, there goes perfect attendance." I roll my eyes. I'm stuck in traffic and she's worried about my attendance record. "Alright ill tell them, just keep your eyes on the road and don't let anything bad happen."

"Thanks, mommy, love you."

"Love you too. Bye."

"Bye."

The line beeps signaling the end of the call. I bring my phone down from my ear and focus my attention back on my notes, trying to retain as much information as I can. I turn the air up in my car due to the heat and try to make myself comfortable.

It's been an hour, I'm officially late for school. But I'm almost there. The traffic got better about an hour ago. I'm almost at my turn to drive on the street my school is on.

I smile as I make the turn and get to school. I quickly rush out of my car and run inside, straight to my first-period class, straight to the office for a late slip. Once I get one I head to class. I open the door and hand my teacher the slip.

"Sorry, I'm late really bad traffic." She waves me off.

"You barely missed anything. Just groups for projects." I nod and turn around to walk to my seat.

My eyebrow furrows when I see Avani sitting next to the popular girls, she's never sat there. I look for Madi and see her in our regular seats. I smile and walk over to her.

"Whats Avani doing?" Madi shrugs her shoulders.

"We have to work in groups of six for the projects. She suggested we work with them." I raise my eyebrow, but just leave it alone. It wouldn't be horrible to work with them. I just never thought Avani would approach them, I thought it would be the other way around.

"What's the project on?"

"Each group is getting assigned a book. We do a PowerPoint and each person has to read a slide."

"Oh, easy." Madi nods.

We continue with class and Avani comes over to us once or twice before moving back to the girls.

The rest of the day goes by pretty slow, we're just getting to lunch. I'm about to sit down at our table in the back when Avani speaks.

"Let's go sit at that table." She points to a table next to Madison and the other girls.

"What Avani, we always sit here." She looks at me with pleading eyes.

"Okay fine." She smiles and we walk over to the table. As soon as we're seated Avani starts to converse with the girls. Madi is trying to keep up with the conversation. I roll my eyes and start to look around the cafeteria.

They land on the boy sitting in front of me, Chase. I scan his body from his head down. I stop at his back where his shirt is kind of flipped up. I see a bright red scar and my eyes widen. I know Chase isn't involved in anything illegal so what could that be from?

I brush it off by telling myself maybe he just had a hookup and the girl had nails. My eyes linger on the scar for a few more seconds before I move on to eating my lunch.

The rest of the day is pretty boring, and I get even more traffic on the way home.

When I get home my mind wanders back to Chase and the scar, and something in the back of my head is telling me, it's not from a girl.

It's the end of the day and I and Madi haven't seen Avani all day.

"Where could she be?"

"I asked Jeremy in third period, he said she ditched with the popular girls."

"No Avani would never do that."

"I don't know Char? She's been with them a lot recently." I sigh and stand next to her.

Just as I do the school doors open behind me, it's Vani. She's walking out with Madison and her friends.

"Avani, we've been looking for you all day."

"Sorry I was hanging with the girls."

"You've been with them a lot recently."

"Yeah, you barely hang out with us," Madi adds.

"Guys I can have friends other than you two, I promise nothing going on."

"Avani are you coming?" Chloe, one of the girls yells from her car.

"Yeah, I'm coming." Avani waves bye to us and runs over to the car and hops in. I sigh.

"Do you need a ride home Mads?" Madi nods and smiles.

I should have known then that our friendship was about to go straight down a cliff and into a watery abyss.
