Chère Mère, Cher Père (Dear Mother, Dear Father),
It feels odd to address this letter to you after all these years, but Arno said that writing down the events that we lived during the past months would help me to clear my mind and step back on all the things we went through. If you still are somewhere out there, you must already know that we brought the Apple of Eden back to the Brotherhood, and that it is now in a safer place. By doing so, we tracked down the man who I thought was responsible for your deaths to then find out that he was far from being the monster I had imagined as a child. Although he still remained the man who killed Arno's father, I could not deny that Shay had great plans for France. Most of his actions were motivated by the desire of doing what seemed right for the world and he seemed filled with remorse for things that he had done in the past — even though I doubt that murdering Charles Dorian has ever been one of those things.
When I told Arno about these thoughts of mine, he surprisingly was not upset. On the contrary, he seemed to understand what I meant and I felt relieved to be able to talk about this with him. I first feared that he would be mad at me for trying to humanize Shay, especially since I knew how much Arno hated that Templar, but then he confessed to me that he had let go of his feelings of vengefulness when I got kidnapped. He told me that he had realized at that moment how much he had lost and had to lose only to track down one single man, and that he did not want to repeat his past mistakes. I understood that he cared enough about me to give up his quest for vengeance and I fell in love with him once again.
I then hesitantly asked him if he was happy that Shay was now dead. He shrugged and sighed that he was not sure. I then told him that Shay was not the one who directly killed my parents, although he had played a role in their deaths. Arno first looked at me with surprise, then asked me if I knew who the actual murderer was. When the name of Germain came out of my mouth, Arno's face darkened and I realized that, just as Shay had told me, Arno had met this man in the past. He did not wait to tell me that it was that same man who had killed his stepfather in 1789, then his stepsister less than a year ago. When he added that Germain died by his hand, I did not know what to say and neither did he. After a long silence, I finally told him that killing Shay had deeply affected me, even though I wasn't sure how and why. Arno's gaze softened. He said he was sorry and that he should have been the one to kill him instead. I wanted to respond that, since he had killed the man who murdered my parents, we were now even. But I then thought that the joke would have been too inappropriate. So I faintly smiled and whispered that I just needed some time to move on, that I will be fine once I will clear my head.
When we arrived in Paris with three artefacts in our possession — a Precursor Box, an Apple and a repaired Sword of Eden — the masters congratulated us for our success. My training was finally over and I officially became an Assassin of the Parisian Brotherhood. Arno elevated to the rank of Master Assassin and is now member of the Council, replacing Master Beylier who left for Saint-Domingue shortly after.
As Arno said back when we activated the Precursor Box for the first time in Austria, we still have a long way to go. Many Apples of Eden are hidden all around the world and we have to get as many as we can before they end up in the wrong hands. Our work is far from done and the future is hazy. But there is one thing that I am sure of : no matter what it holds for us, we will face it together.
Until we meet again,
- Rosalie.
