the smell of the tobacco rushing in forms of smoke was pure joy. the way the stick fit perfectly in between his young lips is what made him continue. pulling it out with his index and middle finger to release the excess build up. his father knew what he did, why his father gives him the packs of cigarettes every other day.
he pulled the cigarette out of his mouth and took a sharp inhale. he looked down at what has been eating him away. struggling to get up, he flicks it in the garbage can then effortlessly poors left over water in the bag.
a laughing face walks into the motel room slamming the screen door behind him. he can't stop laughing. "i'll tell you something, otis. when your old enough like me, i'll take you to a club." the man, james lort, otis's dad, cant get a hold on himself.
he scoffs."no thanks, dad." otis squeezed behind james to get out the door shaking his head.
finally outside, he inhales actual air and not some tobacco flame. he hears a deep voice kind of whispering in a tone that is familiar.
"otis, i'm not done talkin' to you. you don't walk away from me? you hear that? get inside." he slams his foot down and points to the ground sticking his head out more than the rest of his body. otis knew what was coming.
indigo had heard the first screen door fly open creaking, than it slamming shut. she opened two blinds with her index and thumb. a few moments later she watches otis walk out then again slamming the door shut.
in a confused look, "they have got to get that fixed." she closes the blinds expecting nothing else to happen, until, she hears the screen door creak, but never slam. she stops for a moment and turns her head slightly. the room was dark and so was the pale sky. she then continues walking to and flopping on her bed she shares with her mom. her mom is in the bathroom brushing her teeth.
"hey mom?" she applies. "what do you think about the lorts?" her mom looks up at her from the bathroom mirror that faces them both. she spits. "the who?" her face is confused and she leans off of the sink. "the lorts. they live across from us. james?" she keeps adding on. "ohh right. the lorts. i don't really know, why." she turns her head and looks at indigo face to face, then continues brushing. "i don't know either." she lays her back onto the bed. everything goes black.
