You were walking alongside Severus out of Hogwarts grounds to gather some potions ingredients. It was the winter break so it was the perfect time to recollect ingredients and as you were his potions assistant, you had to go with him.

Though you couldn't complain as you got to spend more time with the man you loved. Yes, you loved him. It didn't take much time to realise your feelings for the Potions Master even though you knew he would never feel the same towards you, you couldn't exactly do anything about it because, who can rule their heart?

The priority that you and Severus had to find were some grey mushrooms, a rare plant that professor Sprout couldn't cultivate as it can only grow in its habitat.

"How far are we, Severus?" you asked as you walked side by side with him. The both of you were wearing heavy winter coats as your feet left footprints on the white snow.

"They are at the other side of the Black Lake." he answered monotonously. You sighed, knowing that you still have a long journey to walk.

You still were on Hogwarts grounds and you two have been walking for a long time, or at least that's how you felt it as your feet started to ache and it was getting difficult to walk in the snow.

"How far, Severus? I'm tired." you said "Stop complaining, (y/n). We still have a long way ahead." said Severus and you groaned dramatically making the Potions Master crack a small smile but it was gone as fast as it came.

"We could take a shortcut through the Black Lake, you know?" you said, making the poor man next to you sigh in annoyance.

You started to walk towards the frozen lake making Severus stop in his tracks. "(y/n), what are you doing?" he asked, "Taking a shortcut, of course." you said as you put a foot on the ice "Don't be childish, (y/n). Get back here." you heard him say as you put your other foot on the ice "It looks completely frozen to me. Come on, Severus! We'll get faster this way." you said as you started to walk further in the frozen lake.

Severus approached the big mass of ice but he didn't step on it, instead he saw you as you walked away. He pondered for a good five minutes if it was safe to walk in the ice and as he was going to step on it, a sickening crack came from underneath your feet.

You turned around, meeting the onyx orbs of the Potions Master as yours reflected pure fear.

Severus was never going to get the image of you looking at him with such fear in your (e/c) orbs. "Don't move, (y/n)!" he shouted in desperation.

You tried to hold your breath, afraid that if you inhaled you were going to fall to the freezing waters. Severus started to approach you slowly but then, another crack was heard underneath you, he stopped in his tracks as you held your hand out, trying to reach him. "Severus!" you shouted before the ice swallowed you in a second.

Cold enveloped you, you couldn't breath, you couldn't think all you could do was focus on the pain that the freezing water around you inflicted on your body. You started to feel drowsy, your lungs burned, desperate for air but then, you couldn't keep your eyes open any longer and you let yourself dance on the limbo between death and life.

When Severus saw you fall on the ice, he was quick to approach the hole where you fell, careful so as to not fall himself in the deep and freezing waters.

His gloved hands started to remove the snow from the ice in a desperate attempt to see just a glimpse of you. "Come on, (y/n). Where are you?" he muttered to himself as he removed more and more snow until he caught a piece of (h/c) hair floating down there.

Severus took out his wand from his robes and with a non-verbal spell, he made the ice melt where you were. Putting his wand aside, he sneaked his arms on the cold water and pulled you out of it.
