Fruits of the land

THE TRIO OF GIRLS MARCHED DOWN THE dark path together. Caroline felt a chill go down her spine every once in awhile, making her press her body closer to Lizzie's as they walked, their arms interlocked. The woods scared her, and with good reason, nothing good ever happened in the woods, besides parties of course.

"I hope I do not feel the effects of these berries tomorrow, I have to work with the Whitlocke's and my brother early." The Barlowe girl commented, furrowing her brows.

"Do not worry, m-..Caroline. The berries only make you see a world beyond your own, with just one bite." Lizzie smiled, subtly running her thumb over the girls hand to comfort her, of course she knew that the other girl was afraid of the woods.

"What does an old lady need with that?" Sarah questioned, her brows furrowed in thought.

"She's not just an old lady, the widow is 1,000 years old. She drinks the blood of virgins to keep her youth." Liz told the group, only scaring the girl beside her closer.

"You two are safe then." Sarah teased, referring to the pair in front of her.

"Very funny, Sarah Fier. I am sorry I love to have fun." Caroline rolled her eyes playfully at the girl who was honestly her closest friend.

"She sacrificed her husband to become the devil's bride. That's how she gained eternal life." Lizzie added.

"This story is beginning to seem less and less true as it goes along." The Barlowe girl shook her head, feeling safer now that the story was getting to become more unbelievable.

"Well, I heard she kept the company of the natives, and that she even fell in love with one." Sarah commented, stories in Union always seemed to be twisted as the years went on, this one especially. "That's why she was exiled. She learned their medicine too, Solomon told me. He took his wife to her after they lost their child, but it was too late."

"I for one think it's nice if she fell in love with a native, no man in Union is that special anyways." Caroline looked around happily. "But us women? We're a treat."

"What about the Whitlocke's? You are around them quite often." Hannah finally joined the conversation, genuinely wanting to know.

The Barlowe girl felt Lizzie's body stiffen at the comment, making her hold the girls hand tighter until she felt comfortable again.

"Well for one, Daniel Whitlocke is madly in love with Abigail Berman, and Ezekial.. I only see him as a dear friend." Caroline shrugged. "But he is a nice boy."

Although Lizzie was happy with the response, she stopped in her tracks when noticing she may have been just a bit lost.

"Are you sure this is the right way? How do you know where we are going?" Hannah asked the girl when noticing her expression.
