"I'm starving!" Kendal said as we sat down at a table outside. Our classes were finally over so we decided to get something to eat.
"You're always starving." I said as I bit into my apple. I looked over at a group of boys sitting at the table next to ours. Smart that they picked the one under the tree where it was shady. They were all drinking from...coffee cups? I think they were coffee cups, like the kind you get from Starbucks. Kendal looked back at them and rolled her eyes.
"Ugh look at those boys. You would think they would be a little bit more sophisticated now that they're out of high school."
Every time they would open their mouths I would see red stains on their teeth. I squinted and looked closer. Suddenly my eyes grew wide, I gasped and pulled on Kendal's arm.
"That's him! That's the boy I was talking to yesterday." I said in a hushed tone.
Kendal followed my gaze. "That's Christian?"
I nodded. "Yes. He was with those same boys too."
Kendal took another look at them. "Okay seriously? Who puts kool-aid in a coffee cup?" she said, noticing the red stains on their teeth. "We should go ask them that." She stood up but I quickly pulled her back down.
"Let's not!"
"Fine, you stay here." She got back up and walked over to them in a flirty way.
"Kendal don't!" I said quietly, but it was too late. I groaned went after her.
"Hi boys." she said, giving them all a smile. They responded by looking her up and down and smiling. I stood beside Kendal and crossed my arms.
"Hey I know you." Christian said, jumping down from the table. "You're...." His voice trailed off. "You're Lisa, right?"
I gave him a fake smile. "It's Lucy." I corrected him.
Kendal leaned towards my ear. "Strike one. He couldn't even remember your name." she whispered.
I nudged her in the side, telling her to be quiet. "So...what are you drinking?" I said, looking at their red-stained mouths.
"Yeah because it's showing up on your teeth. You all look like five year olds who are in desperate need of a sippy cup." Kendal said. I quickly nudged her again, but a lot harder this time.
One of the boys wiped his mouth off with his thumb and then licked it off. Christian put his cup down on the table and exchanged weird looks with all of the boys. I can not believe she said that to them. One of the boys jumped off the tabled and stared at us intensively.
"You girls should be talking to people who are more on your level." he said.
"Excuse me? What is that supposed to mean?" Kendal said as she crossed her arms over her chest.
He smiled deviously at her. "Just stay in your lane. And don't say the wrong thing to the wrong people. You'll regret it."
"Is that supposed to be some sort of advice?" I said.
He shrugged. "Sure. See ya freshmens." He took another sip from his cup, put his shades on, and then walked away. The other boys did the exact same thing and followed after him. Christian stayed behind.
"My boys can get a little bit irritable when they're hungry." he said.
"Then you should tell them to eat something." I told him.
He looked me up and down and then smirked. "They will." He picked his cup up from the table, pulled his shades out from his pocket, and walked in the direction that his friends went in.
