"Leah? Leah!"
I could hear my little brother's voice from the hallway. He was bouncing up the stairs to my room. He had just gotten home from his first day of school, he was in year 2 now. Normally I would pick him up from school because I usually worked at night, but today my mum had been kind enough to do it, so I could sleep in. Thus, I was still in bed even though it was way too late for that.
"Are you sleeping?" his little voice came from the other side of the door to my room.
"Nope, come in, bud!" I called, and he immediately came bouncing through my door and onto my bed. He was beaming.
"Did you have a good first day at school?" I asked him while hiding a yawn behind my hand.
"It was amazing!" he smiled. He looked so adorable with one of his front teeth missing. I grabbed him and pulled him under the covers with me.
"I wanna hear all about it!" I smiled while kissing his cheek. He squirmed and was practically still bouncing even though I was cuddling him.
"We got a new teacher, Leah, and he is just the coolest teacher in the world!" he beamed.
"That's sounds amazing!" I smiled, "What subject is he teaching?"
"Music! Mrs. Williamson stopped working, so he's gonna teach us now," he said. Music hadn't been Jake's best subject until now. The teacher, Mrs. Williamson, was an old hag, who didn't want to let the kids near any instruments. She wanted to teach them theory and how to read sheets. And while that's great and all, it was also quite too ambitious for a 6-year-old who couldn't sit still for more than 10 minutes.
"He let me play the drums! And he said that I was really good at it!" Jake had turned around in my grip so he was facing me.
"Oh, wow!" I commented. Truly happy that Jake was so excited."Jacob?" my mum called from downstairs.
"He's up here!" I called back.
A few seconds later my mum was standing in the doorway.
"Come downstairs and do your homework, honey," she said to my little brother.
He instantly hid his head under my duvet. I looked at my mum and rolled my eyes.
"It's okay, bud, I'll come down with you," I told him. He peeked out at me.
"Fiiiine," he sighed and jumped out of my bed.
"I just need to get dressed, then I'll be there," I said. He ran out of my room and my mum followed him. I stretched my body and got out of bed.It was nice being home with my parents and Jake again. I had moved back home after a break up three months ago, and I was really enjoying my time with especially my brother again. I knew it wasn't ideal to be living at home with your parents at 21, but for now it was fine. It also came in handy that I could pick Jake up after school instead of my parents having to hire a babysitter for that, he was still too young to walk home alone.
I picked my phone up from my nightstand and looked at the screen. It had been on silent mode while I was asleep, and now there was three missed calls and a couple of texts from my ex. I sighed. He still tried to get back together with me, so he used every excuse he had to contact me. Right now he wanted to talk to me about all of the stuff that we bought when we were together. Just as I was going to put my phone down again, it started ringing. It was him. I answered it.
"What do you want?" I said not even bothering being polite anymore.
"I wanna know how you are, babe," he said.
"Stop calling me that, I'm fine, can you please just get to the point?" I wished that I never had to talk to him again.
"Can we maybe meet up and talk about our stuff?" he asked innocently.
"I told you, it's all yours, just please leave me alone," I said and sighed. He was silent for a while.
"I just wanna see you and apologize..." he said a bit defeated.
"You already did, and I told you that we're over, so please just move on now," I said harshly.
"But I can't... I love you," he begged. I was so tired of having this conversation over and over again.
"You don't cheat on people you love, I can't talk anymore, bye!" I said and hung up. I quickly put some clothes on and hurried down the stairs to help Jake with his homework.
I was walking through the doors of my brother's little school. This was also my old school. It felt weird being back, I didn't have any particularly good memories from here. But I shook it off. It wasn't about me anymore. I was a grown up now, who shouldn't be intimidated by some hallways at a school. And I had to pick up Jake. I eventually found the music room where Jake was having his last class. They had moved it since I went here. I looked at my phone, I was a bit too early. I sighed and sat down on a chair outside the door.
