"Dad, I'll be fine, I promise," I said to my father with tears in my eyes as I was boarding my flight. It was time for a change, even though I knew how bad it would hurt my dad and I because he was all I knew.
"Tyler, promise me you'll check in everyday, promise me," he answered back with his eyebrows furrowed trying to hold back the tears from flowing. I signed him I promise, and just like that, I was off for a new life.
I arrived at my seat on the plane and put my carry-on above me. I looked around just to see any other person, an old lady sat next to me but she didn't look too friendly so I minded my own business. I waited until the pilot came over the speaker to announce our arrival time and destination to put my earphones in; I kept thinking to myself that I got onto the wrong flight.
Flight 783 to Fairfield, North Carolina taking off, arrival time 9:30 a.m.
Great. I thought to myself, a twelve hour flight was ahead of me. A Texas girl taking on North Carolina? To stay with a woman who left me and my dad when I was only eleven. That thought put me to sleep for the next twelve hours.
The next thing I knew I was getting shook by the unkind-looking lady who was sitting next to me. "We're here darling, grab your things," she whispered in a gentle voice. Hm, maybe she isn't mean. I giggled at my thoughts and took a deep breath as I took my first steps off of the plane. I texted my father to let him know that I made it and that I didn't disappear for five years. Next was to call my mom. I went to dial up her number but I didn't need to. She ran up to me with my luggage flying behind her and embraced me with a hug. I was taken off guard but nonchalantly hugged her back because I was still half asleep.
We walked outside to her surprisingly very nice car. She put my things in the trunk neatly as I climbed into the passenger seat of her car. She got in soon after.
"Look I want to-" she began to say but I cut her off.
"Mom, I know there was a reason you left, but frankly I don't want to hear it, I forgive you, there is no bad blood, I came here for change not to dwell on the past. It's time to make new memories," I answered softly with a small grin on my face. She nodded with a reassuring smile on her face as she started the car.
What felt like hours was really only thirty minutes. We pulled into my moms house and started unloading all of my belongings, and then carried it all upstairs. This is nothing that I was used to. This house was huge. It was on the beach and my window overlooked it. Along with my amazing view I had a balcony. It's as if my dad would have shipped my room over but just a 5.0 version of it. It was beautiful.
I put my things in their respected drawers and plopped down on my bed which felt like a literal cloud. Unlocked my phone to a couple notification, but one that I never would have expected in a million years. It was him. Why now? Why now when he didn't even know I left. It was Kamdyn.
Hey Ty, word got around... did you really leave?
No shit I left, was the first thought but I'll play nice-ish.
Yes kamdyn. I left. For good, I don't intend on coming back either. Goodbye.
I took a deep breath as I pressed send. I don't know why he would text me now? For God's sake he cheated on me with half of our junior class. Three years went down the drain like it was nothing to him, but they were everything to me.
