Prolog- Lacey's POV
Fighting never bothered me. It was in my blood. The movements as simple as breathing. Punch. Kick. Swing. Duck. Jab. Jump. Repeat. I trained to fight all my life. Sure, I may loose some great friends along the way, but I knew they died for something bigger. If I died, it was for the greater cause for mankind. So given that I never really thought about snapping bones, breaking necks and doing damage. Oh no, I didn't dwell on that. Not one bit.
I was out to save the world.
And with that, I never thought too hard.
Until we moved to Mountain Springs in Colorado that I finally stopped to think for the first time about if this was all worth it...
{Chapter One~ Lacey's POV}
For some reason, the clouds began to cry, and at that some moment the wind decided to hold back its warm breath, leaving the air suddenly cold. I shuddered, pulling my arms around me as I watched the first flakes touch the ground, turning the green grass white. It was only September.
Most people would think it was a rare occurrence, but I knew better. I'd been in the game long enough to know the opponents moves.
"Hmph." A voice said beside me. I whirled around, forgetting for a moment that my best friend Maxii was standing beside me. I watched as she held out her hand, snowflakes melting on her skin on impact. "Want me to round them up for you?" she asked, still fixated on the snow.
I looked at my watch, reading 9:17 p.m. Most of the house would be empty. It was a Friday night after all. I shrugged anyway. "Gather whose in there and we'll see what we've got." Maxii nodded, her thick blonde mane bobbling as she did. She turned quickly on her heels, running into the six story mansion behind us that we called home.
I was trying to make sense of all this. We had only been in Mountain Springs, Colorado for three weeks based upon a strong lead. There was no way the others from LA knew we were here yet...
I went to go into the house a couple of minutes later, slightly surprised to see that Maxii's little foot prints were already more than halfway covered. I quickened my steps, noticing just how frozen my feet were. The warmth of the house hugged me close and became a blanket of comfort when I opened the great oak door. I looked around the fest floor, trying to spot the members of The Fallen. This was where we usually met...
"In the basement Lacey!" I heard Sammi's sweet, usual cheerful voice call out. I stood there, puzzled for a moment. The basement? I shrugged, not really caring either way and made my way down the flight of stairs. It was unusually bright, all the lights being on and such.
"Whose bright idea was it to meet down-" I stopped when I reached the bottem, looking around in awe. What had once been nothing but storage for me to put all my crap in, was now... a meeting room? The boxes were all gone, new plush couches spread along the walls. High tables with equally high chairs in one space, next to what looked like a mini kitchen. A single 72 inch flat screen TV hung up on the wall opposite the couches, and there in the middle of it all was a four panel rectangular desk. The desk was lined with not one, but two computers, an office phone, printer, cabinets and much, much more.
"What the hell is this?" I demanded, looking at the eleven bodies spread among the frunichure. Sammi got up and clapped her hands, almost bouncing over to me. Her long chocolate hair was bobbling up and down from the high ponytail she had it in.
"I got tired of meeting in the living room. Soo..." She held her hands out wide, spinning in a slow circle. "what do you think?" A giggle erupted from her plush pink lips. There was no hiding the fact that she was pleased with herself, and her excitement was contagious.
What I would really like to know was where my stuff was. But I smiled anyway, grateful of what she did. "I really like it Sammi." I made a mental note to ask her later. She nodded her head and went to retreat to the couches with the others, and placed herself in Sheckler's lap. I did a quick inventory of who was here.
Sammi was snuggled up in Sheckler's arms on one side of the seat, while at the other Carrington sat with Maxii's head in his lap, her body spread out and taking up the rest of the space. Jinx was standing beside Care, arms folded against his chest like he had somewhere better to be. His twin sister Jadis sat on the floor, her chin resting in her knees. Grace sat on a bar stool, covered up in a blanket so you could only see her face and a few whisps of her firey red hair. Dove sat next to Sam, her head on his shoulder, and standing next to them was Hawk. Lastly Dawn was standing close to the door, his shaggy purplish-black hair looking a mess around his face as usual.
"Stop standing there being stupid and get on with it already Lacey!" Max called out, ever so irritable.
"Shut up Maxii." I growled at her, locking eyes before looking at the rest of the group. I took a deep breath, ready to begin. "Whose been outside?" I asked. When no one said anything or moved I rolled my eyes, slightly frustrated. "It's snowing." A few mummers rippled through before Jinx straightened up.
"No shit. We live in Colorado, Lacey." He retorted, his bright green hues intense. "Any hatching with a brain could put two and two together to figure that out."
"It's September Jinx." I stated, feeling my blood pressure start to rise. I did not do well with smart asses.
"It's snowed in September before. Don't get your thong in a bunch." He mouthed right back. I clenched my teeth, my jaw set in a hard line. That was it.
I snarled slightly, bearing my teeth. "Get out Jinx." I ordered, watching him unmoving. "Get OUT Jinx." I growled, getting louder, pointing towards the stairs. He pushed himself off the wall, his eyes hard with defiance.
"You're not that big, bad leader you think you are." He mocked, his face less than two inches from mine. The air in my lungs started to disappear and a lump formed in my throat. He smirked as he walked past me, quickly bounding up the stairs and slamming the door leading out side. I closed my eyes, trying to keep my cool in front of the others.
When I did open them, I saw the now ten pairs of eyes watching me closely for my next move. The pup had nerve to talk to me like that and they knew it. But he was stupid. Pups always were. And quite frankly, I was sick of his mouth. He was going to learn.
"Dismissed." I spat, avoiding eye contact and going back to the first floor. I opened the door leading back outside, the cold air stripped me of the warm comfort of the house in seconds.
"Jinx?" I called out into the darkness, looking for the golden haired boy. A low deep growl replied and I felt an odd smirk creep onto my lips. Slowly turning, I locked with Jinx's bright green eyes, but now in the beholder of a thickly built blue-furred wolf. "All ready for me, huh?" I asked him, watching the snow melt in his thick pelt. As always. I felt that eerie sense of power tugging at me as I chuckled. I held back a little longer, shaking my head and clicking my tongue. "You made the wrong move." I seethed.
Closing my eyes, I let instinct take over, the wild calling to be released. My inner nature. In those short seconds of closed eyes, I became free of my skin. I felt my thick chocolate pelt raising at my scruff. Instead of feet sheltered by shoes, my paws sunk into the cold snow. I pinned my ears back and bared my teeth, snapping my jaws as I took a step forward. Here goes nothing.
