Miss Laney looked around on the front porch. She knew it was unladylike to answer the door in her nightdress, but someone had knocked on her door, which usually meant a new arrival.
Just as she suspected, a baby was wrapped in a bushel and blanket; sitting on the porch. She went to pick up the bushel, wondering what kind of Lovely this child would be.
Miss Laney strutted back into the house, slamming the door with her foot as she did.
"Children," she called. "Where are you, my Lovelies?"
"Miss Laney," the oldest child, Chester, groaned, rubbing his eyes.
"It is two-o-clock in the morning. Why are you waking us?" Chester, a small boy with the mere age of twelve, was indeed the oldest of the bunch. But, as plain as day, he was not the most mature, and thence forth did not enjoy waking up early.
"Well, my dear Chester," Miss Laney replied. "There seems to be a new arrival. Fetch Petunia and Grace, will you? Also, tell Grace to wake the others. I want everyone down here to meet the newest Lovely."
Chester's eyes almost bounced out of their sockets when he heard about the new arrival. He bounded up the stairs screaming, "Petunia! Grace! Everybody! Wake up, there's a new arrival! Wake up!"
Miss Laney giggled at the boy. Soon she heard the patter of feet on the floor above her. Soon all of her Lovelies were downstairs. Just to be sure, she did a small head count.
Chester, Petunia, Grace, Charles, Abraham, Alex, Judy, and David. All were there.
"Hello, my Lovelies. As you may have heard, we have a new child here with us." A small murmur came from the children.
Miss Laney unwrapped the small child from its cloth. It was a boy. The small child was covered with hair from head to toe, aside from the mouth, eyes, and nose. Some of the younger children gasped.
Miss Laney looked for a note, stating the child's name, but could not find one.
"Sebastian," she said. "His name is Sebastian."Hey. I'm Gia lol. I know this story is sort of like Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar children, as that is what inspired me to write this. But at least know that these kids have birth defects and diseases, not peculiar abilities. I'm trying to make it a little original. The lady pictured is Miss Laney. "Lovelies" means "beautiful people" so all the children (and Miss Laney herself) are beautiful, but I also took it to mean "different" or "having abilities" because the conditions they have are rare. I hope you like it.
