You Had Me At Hello

Another day, another detention. I would love to be anywhere but here, but detention is like my second home. But a much quieter, stricter home. I drag myself into the familiar room with white walls and desks ordered in 5 by 5 centered in the middle of the classroom. I make my way to the back of the room and plop down in a random desk. I slouch down and look around at all the faces, mostly regulars, like myself. I sigh and pull out a pen and my notebook. I open it up to a blank page and begin to write.

"It is better to be loved by one person who knows your soul than millions who don't even know your phone number."

I smile to myself, when all of a sudden the teachers voice snaps me out of my zone.

"Welcome to detention everyone. I'm Mr. Leo, as majority of you already know. But for the newbies-"

I look around the room once more. Newbie? I just looked around not that long ago.. Did I miss them? As I'm scanning the room, I notice a boy with bright red, dyed hair. And boom, newbie spotted. He definitely wasn't in here when I looked around the first time.
- "Audrey?"
Mr. Leo's voice cuts me out of my thoughts.

"Oh.
what?
hi.
here."
I feel my fave turn as red as the newbies hair. I slouch down in my desk chair & brush my hand through my hair while I listen to Mr. Leo ramble off names.

"Michael Clifford?"

Thats a new name. Obviously the new kids name.

"Well looky here. A newbie. Why are you joining us?"

Mr. Leo asks.

"Uh. I may have skipped a few classes.."

Mr. Leo nods.

"You should get along well with Audrey. She's the queen of skipping."

Michael looks back st me & let me tell you, he had the face of an angel. I could feel my face turn even more red than before. I managed to wave & smile at him, even though I felt frozen in time. He was gorgeous. Michael then mirrored my actions.

After Mr. Leo informs us of the rules of detention, which I've heard countless times before, I pick up my pen & started writing again.

"I think if he was a book,
he'd be the type you throw across the room, then hours later pick it up again & leaf through its pages"

Yes.
That seems to be the perfect way to describe the red-haired boy, dispite not knowing him.

"psssst."

I look over & no one other than Michael was sitting there.

"Hi. I'm Michael. But you already know that."

He sticks out his hand. I place my hand in his, & we shake.

"Audrey. But you knew that."

"Whatcha writing?" he asks.

"Oh. Just dumb little things.." I trail off.

"They're no good. Trust me."

"I'm sure they're lovely." Michael says.

"May I see them?"

I tense up at his question. I've never let anyone go through my notebooks. Not my best friend. Not my family.

I reluctantly nod & fidget with my zipper bracelet while Michael slides the notebook infront of him.

Michael flips through the endless amount of poems with more interest than I thought anyone would ever have in my work.

"Did you write these?"

I nod.

"Yeah. They all came from my cold, small heart & were written with this pen."

I hold up my favorite pen.

Michael smiles a heartwarming smile at me.

"Your writings. They're amazing."

I blush a little.

"Thanks. I guess even the most heartless of bitches have to express their thoughts & feelings somehow."

I say with a joking tone.

It may be the truth, but Michael doesn't need to know how heartless I can be. & I don't think he'd ever want too.
