"Wait, wait, wait, so you're tutoring Ethan?" Rielle asks.
I nod my head for what seems like the thousandth time.
"Ethan Ramirez?" She clarifies.
I nod my head once more.
A bag of popcorn is placed in the microwave and the plastic wrapper is thrown away. Rielle is still in shock and awe. Melanie is dying on the couch over Rielle's shock and my nonchalantness.
"He's so hot," Rielle says more to herself than either of us.
Melanie scoffs, "not really, he's too," she thinks for a word, "manly?"
"Melanie, at this point I wouldn't doubt you were a lesbian," Rielle continues, "there is no guy up to your standards but you find almost every girl or non-binary person that walks by attractive."
Melanie changes the subject, "So Rielle, who's your current hook up?"
"Don't have one."
Melanie gasps putting her hand to her chest, "Caz, get the thermometer."
Laughter fills the small apartment until we hear a series of loud beeps.
I reach into the cabinet to grab a bowl for the popcorn that just finished popping.
After school the 3 of us always watch something on Netflix, eat snacks, and gossip. Right now we're about halfway through "Never Have I Ever."
I make the short walk over to the couch and set the popcorn and my glass of milk down on the sturdy, antique coffee table. After my ass gets acquainted to the soft fabric, I grab the food from the table in front of me.
Rielle presses play when I begin to eat some popcorn.
"I will never understand why you have to dip your popcorn in milk," Melanie states.
"If you would just try it, you would understand completely," I defend.
She inspects the popcorn and milk combo in disgust, "can't, lactose intolerant."
"You've downed a whole tub of ice cream in less than 20 minutes," I argue.
"I was on my period and ice cream was the only thing that could help, so," she sticks her tongue out at me childishly, "also I really regretted it later."
Rielle chimes in, "Can you two please stop arguing about Caz's weird food combos and Melanie stomach issues and pay attention to the tv?"
"Like you're actually watching it," Melanie jokes, "you're probably too busy thinking about Ethan's sculptured jawline."
Rielle pretends to be offended and launches a pillow at Melanie. It hits her right smack in the face. For being so dumb she's got really good aim.
"Did you just throw a pillow at me?"
Rielle has a mischievous look on her face. "Yeah, and what about it?"
"Oh it's on bitch."
Pillows are flung and fired between the two. A stray pillow hits me and I take that as an invitation to join the fight. A war begins.
* * *
yes you were just robbed :)
"Ah, fuck," Melanie says looking down at her phone that had just dinged. That text was responsible for the end of the war. "My mom wants me home to watch my brothers."
I give her a quick hug and a peck on the cheek, "Bye, miss you already!"
"Bye gorgeous," Rielle repeats my actions.
"Rielle, why the fuck are you saying bye to me?" Melanie asks our simple minded friend.
"Because you're leaving?" She tries to make it sound like Melanie is the dumb one.
She puts a hand to her face and shake her head, "I'm your ride you airhead."
"Oh shit, you're right," She looks at me and waves. "Bye Caz!" She begins following Melanie.
Melanie opens the door and gives me a final wave, "Bye babes, see you tomorrow!" Rielle closes the door behind them and they start the journey through the apartment building to the parking lot.
I walk into the kitchen and decide to start making dinner early. It's just me and my mom so she works long hours to make ends meet. I keep offering to get a job to help but she says school is more important. To make up for not having a job I always cook dinner and do most things around the house. I can tell my mom appreciates being able to relax after work rather than be stressed cooking dinner or cleaning. Seeing her happy makes me happy.
If you're wondering where my dad is it's pretty simple. My parents had me kind of young and my father wasn't ready for that responsibility. He's tried to come back once or twice but my mom and I think we're better off just the two of us.
I fill a pot with water and allow it to start bubbling a little before adding bow tie noodles. I salt the water for flavor and move on to preheating the oven.
I take out a pan and put on 2 pieces of frozen garlic bread. When the oven beeps I put them in.
After noodles are done cooking I strain the water out and add some more salt and a little pepper. I let them cool a little before getting myself a large serving. I put the rest of the noodles in a plastic container and put them in the microwave for when my mom gets home.
I get the garlic bread out of the oven and put one piece in the microwave and keep the other for myself.
On my bow ties I sprinkle a little Parmesan cheese and add some Ragú sauce. I top it off with even more Parmesan before mixing the sauce and noodles and taking a big bite.
Yum. A simple, yet delicious dinner.
When I finish my meal I put the dishes in the sink. I'll do them tomorrow.
I make the short walk to my bedroom, sit down at my desk, and do the hour worth of homework I have left over from study hall.
I shower and change into pajamas. I sit in my bed watching something random on Netflix and scrolling through my phone.
Around ten I hear my mom come in and decide to call it an early night. Early dinner and early bedtime? Wow I'm early for everything today.
