Laura's POV:
Do you ever have that feeling where you just don't feel like you belong anywhere? And that no matter how hard you try and socialize with others you just can't be able to make any friends? Well, that's how I feel, all the time.
I'm the new kid here at New Salem High, which isn't new for me cause my parents and I move a lot thanks to their business. And I'm always the new kid at every different school. And at every school, I get picked on because I'm the new kid or because I'm a bit of a geek. I wear glasses and wear clothes that most girls would find lame and disgusting, their words not mine.
It's always the same wherever I go, and I don't know how much longer I can take it.
I sigh as I walk down the hallway. It's the end of the day and I was making my way to the main entrance as fast as I can. But unfortunately, I wasn't going fast enough.
The next thing I knew, a huge body slams into me and bangs me into the lockers. I grunt in slight pain as I fall to the floor dropping my school books. Everyone starts laughing and pointing at me, some are even taking pictures.
"Watch where you're going, geek!" A jock teases me and laughs with the crowd.
I silently glare at the guy and pick up my things. But as I was reaching for my biology book, another hand reaches over and grabs it instead. I look up and see it's a goth teenage girl. Her skin was pale and she had on black makeup. Her hair was also black and short with one blue streak in it. And she wore an oversized sweater with white stripes and a skull on it, fishnet fingerless gloves underneath the sweater, blue shorts, black and grey striped socks that reached all the way up to her thighs, and brown hiking boots.
"Here you go," she says, giving me my book.
"Thanks," I say, taking the book from her.
"No problem, and hey, don't pay any attention to these guys, they think that just because you're the new kid that gives them the right to pick on you," She tries to assure me.
I cast my eyes downward and tell her, "That may be easy for you, but it's not easy for me."
I then walk away from her and continue my way down the hall.
------------------------------------------
I watch everything pass by as I'm sitting in the chauffeur car. Yeah, my family and I are pretty rich but it's nothing special to me.
My parents own a successful company and they're out on business all the time. They are never home and I'm all by myself. They've never been there for me, especially at times when I needed them the most. So, we may be rich but for me, it's lonely.
I spot my new house up ahead. It's a fancy-looking modern house with a big pool in the backyard. I sigh at the thought of being in that empty house with no mom or dad waiting for me there.
The car pulls up into the driveway and slowly enters the garage. The car parks there and I open the car door and slide out. I gently close the door behind me and head inside the house. I make my way to the front door where the mailbox was. The mailbox was connected to the house so should the mailman ever come all he has to do is slide the box open, drop the mail in, and close it.
I open the mailbox and see a couple of envelopes in there. I reach in and pull them out and sort through them. Bill, bill, an invitation to my parents, bill. Then I come upon the envelope I have been excited to see. On the envelope, it spells the name of my pen pal, Frank Stein.
Frank and I have been pen pals for the past few months. It first started when I found an ad in a magazine I was looking at, saying that I can connect with someone through letters if I sign up for only $20. So I sent them the $20 and they sent me the name of my pen pal. I sent him a letter first and after two days I got his letter. And it's been going on and on for a long time now.
From what I know about Frank is that he doesn't live in New Salem and he goes to a different school. He's 16 and he seems very energetic, based on his letters. He loves to explore and try new things, he cares a lot about his friends, and he really loves his school. He wrote that there everyone is accepted, freaky flaws and all, whatever that means. He says the strangest words, like voltage, freaky, 'oh my ghoul', and he told me that instead of having an iPhone he has an iCoffin. I'm guessing that he must be goth or emo or he must really love Halloween or something like that. But aside from his unusual language, he's so sweet and understanding. He told me his story about being the new kid at his school and how hard it was for him. But then once he made friends he finally started to feel like he belonged. I wish I was as lucky as he was.
I place the other envelopes on a stand by the door and take my envelope up to my room. I open my door and place my backpack next to my desk where I have my laptop and other supplies I would need for homework and such. I take a seat on my bed and peel the envelope open. I grab the letter from inside and unfold it, reading Frank's letter.
'Hey Laura,
I hope New Salem is treating you well. I know how much you hate being the new kid and having to get picked on by the other students, but you never know, maybe you'll be able to make a friend there this time.
Anyway, I got to tell you about what happened last week! So, this guy named Leon told my friend Chike that if he along with the rest of the gang spent the whole night at our school on Friday the 13th we would get our pictures taken for the fearbook. And of course Chike agreed to the challenge because he felt that he was losing his popularity. It was said that a creature lurks amongst the school every Friday the 13th after the sunsets. And we thought that we were being chased by the said creature, but it turned out to be nothing bad. See it turned out that Friday the 13th was really his birthday and he was feeling lonely, so we threw him a big birthday bash. It was the best night of our lives! And we showed Leon and his two followers what for. The big guy even scared them which was hilarious! I wish you could've seen their faces!
I wish you could see my face too. And my friends. In fact, I wish you could see everything here at my school. I think you would like it here cause everyone is accepted for who they are and are not judged. And it would be voltageously awesome to go to the same school together.
But hey, who knows, maybe someday it will happen! I hope it does soon. That way you'll never have to feel alone again, and I can get to see you every day.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Sincerely,
Your pen pal/friend,
Frank'
'Aw! Frank, you are so sweet and thoughtful!' I thought in my head as I smile and hold the letter to my chest.
I also wish he and I go to the same school. He's the only friend I have in this whole world. Even though I don't know what he looks like, I know that he is the most amazing guy I've ever known.
I walk to my desk and take a seat. Then I open a little chest I keep there and open it to reveal all my other letters from Frank. I place my newest letter in the chest and close it. Now it's time for me to write a letter to Frank.
I grab a pencil and pull out a lined piece of paper that I keep in a stack next to me. Then I start writing.
