"Hi. I'm Raelyn."
"Steve Rogers. This is my best friend, Bucky."
"So how'd you end up in the middle of a war, Rae?"
"Same way the rest of us did. Fear, and the desire to be a hero.""May I have this dance, Rogers?"
"Happy Birthday, Rae!"
*BANG BANG BANG*
"Rae! Raelyn! Rae, hey hey hey it's ok. You'll be ok!" "Help! Someone, Help! Nonono, don't close your eyes. Look at me, Walters. You'll be ok. Someone, please!"
"I love you, so much Rogers. I'm sorry.""Raelyn Walters was my best friend, my first love, and the girl i wanted to marry. She had a way of making you feel something more in yourself. She was the kind of girl you could fall in love with after one conversation. And I did. God, I wish I could've saved her. I wish I never left her side. I'll miss you, so much. Thank you for being you."
Here lies Raelyn Jane Walters. Beloved daughter, partner, and war hero. Taken too soon 1929-1945Steve punches the bag as hard as he can, as if hurting it will stop the memories.
"So, tell me, why did you become Captain America?"
"In the war, I had a very close friend who didn't make it out. She died in the May 7th Berlin battle, taken way too soon. I promised myself that, if I had the chance to make the world a better place, I would. For her."
"You want to tell us more about her?"
"No, I don't think I will."His punches become more and more aggressive.
"You won't be alone, Rogers. I'm kinda attached to you."
"Oh my god! This guy's still alive!"
Steve punches the bag, easily a hundred pounds, across the room with one swing. Snapping the metal chain and pummeling it back a dozen feet, sand spilling out from where he cracked the fabric. He stands up, breathing hard, and grabs another bag, resuming a more normal routine. A man walks in. "Trouble sleeping?" the man asks, taking note of the broken bag across the room. "I slept for seventy years, sir. I think I've had my fill." the blonde responds as he continues punching the bag. "Then you should be out, celebrating, seeing the world." Steve stops and walks over to the bench, unraveling the tape off his hands. "I went under to save the world from another war. I wake up, they say we won. They didn't say who or what we lost." The younger man takes out his compass, gazing at the woman in the picture.
"Who's the girl?"
"Raelyn Walters. One of my best friends. She died before we won, and I promised myself I'd make the world a better place in her honor. I kept that promise."
"We've made some mistakes along the way. Some very recently." the other man cuts in. "You here with a mission, sir?"
"Call me Nick. But yes, I am."
"Trying to get me back in the world?"
"Trying to save it." Nick hands Steve a file. "Hydra's secret weapon. Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you. He thought what we think, the Tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That's something the world sorely needs."
