She didn't know why he came or why he told her this. Maybe, it was out of courtesy, having spent time with her. Saying his last farewells to the people he knew so that they might remember him even as his body is left in the sands.
She wanted to cheer him up; remind him that people were waiting for him. He had looked so helpless and distraught that she tried to alleviate his burden, even if it's just a little bit.
Like what her brother would do to her.
So, she gave him her bracelet. It had been something she had worn for quite a long time, a cheap bracelet she made after her brother bought her the materials. For him, who treated her decently, as if she were a person worthy of respect, she was willing to give this to. She had no one else, and his expression when she offered it to him along with a promise to wait for him made her heart flutter.
He must have liked it.
Life would have proceeded as usual. She would be happy, living in her small, slightly run-down home, just a far distance away from the Main House, with her older brother, who would soon have a family of his own, who she hoped would be a part of hers as well.
Then, the verdict came. They were to be executed.
Apparently, they were accused of conspiring with the enemy. She never fully understood it, for she didn't know who the enemy was or how her family was involved in particular, but they had "proof." That was all that mattered.
They couldn't kill her older brother. She didn't care about what would happen to the rest, as they never did with her, but her older brother was innocent. Her older brother, who treated her with love, would not dare joins arms with the enemy. He just wouldn't.
Except it had been revealed they he had locked lips and exchanged secrets with a spy inside the Palace. Unfortunately, the culprit had escaped before they could catch him, and he was nowhere to be found. Leaving her brother. Leaving them.
She was ready to die. It didn't matter anymore. Her older brother would no longer be there.
There would be no one left to love her.
But surprisingly, the man to who she gave her bracelet came back. And he wanted to marry her. It was probably out of obligation, for he had been a close friend, and even if she didn't fully understand the situation, she knew there was nothing he could do about them. He could only save her.
She hated it. He must have hated her too. Her older brother was more worthy of a second chance in life. Was it so wrong that he fell in love with the bad person? Her older brother was kind; he would surely not make the same mistake twice. But there were no second chances in treason, and the monarchy did not care about him. They wanted bloodshed.
Only her. Only she cared about him.
