A kill in heaven

After the school's dismissal, I left for the woods to practice my daily meditating. Maybe that's not the right word to use for sitting on a broken bench in the middle of a probably haunted forest that echoes screams from dawn till dusk, but it wouldn't sound healthy if I called that isolating. I don't exactly know, but I prefer sitting alone somewhere I'm entirely sure no one would follow me into, neither think that I would adventure inside.

My feet lead me by a few farmers cultering their rich ranges with all sorts of vegetation. Some of them recognized me as Avirel's orphan, a nickname I didn't quite like but didn't feel the need to change or suppress. One of them, who seemed deeply infected by my state, even presented me a big pulpy orange, adopting his usual precautious manner. I took it gratefully and thanked him.

After a while of walking through fruitful trees and children playing in the mud, I reached the huge meadow that belonged to Mr Shelbey. He decided to leave it uncultivated for unknown reasons, which didn't bother me therefore granted me less unwanted meetings.

I've always liked nature ; plants, stones, skies...They had a special charm within them. Colors and smells made me forget about my sinister curse, they entrailed me in a magical universe that emanated innocence and purity. This field was no exception. Long green grass covered the entire surface in the spring season, accompanied by different types of wild flowers with colorful petals. It often seemed to me as if all artists who died relived on another dimension, invisible to us earth creatures, they then took their brushes and started creating masterpieces on the ground and the sky for us to admire. We were in the middle of August, summer stained the meadow with its hot colors, the grass that reached my hips was tainted in yellow, it lost its ususal springiness to the burning sun, starting to adapt a stiff membrane, crunching when I stomp on it.

I made my way through the rest of the elevated plants oblivious to the reptile in front of me and its approaching body. The beast readied itself to attack me when I backed out, processing the scene before me.

An enormous 3 feet or so snake ogled at me through its irises. Its skin, covered in seemingly sharp squames, was raven colored skewered in yellow stripes. I would have to admit, the creature was beautiful tho, I would have loved to inspect its majesty further if it didn't look about to swallow me in one bite.

The reptile rather bored with my state of mixed contemplation and dread moved swiftly closer, prepared to tangle my shins in its long neverending spineless body before planting its spiteful fangs in my flesh. Unfortunetly, it hadn't longer to fantasize about its night meal because a familiar heat has already engulfed my chest and orange smoke has been unleashed from my limbs, drowning the beast in complete agony before turning its black irises a dull gray.

   It happened, again.

I burried the corpse under a mass of dried leaves and weed. No one needed to see this hideous crime. I wouldn't allow their minds to wander to forbidden thoughts in search of possible explainations when the reality seems impossible itself.

I  couldn't risk going to the woods now, not with the sun starting to set. I choose to sit in the edge of a hill, that borded the meadow from the left, resting my head on a tree trunk. The sky was burning orange and magenta, violet hues streaking from the horizon as the first stars began to shine in the cornflower heaven above me. The last rays of sunshine were splashing on the leaves over me before disappear as the sun fell below the horizon.

My mind took me back to the half of the latest hour, I tried to envision  in my imagination as best as I could the poor reptile. I just killed another extant creature unwillingly. The snake didn't deserve to witness the display of my curse, nor be the subject of it. It was unusually pretty ; pretty yet deadly, like me.
