Waliha sighed. Dealing with hormonal patients did get to her sometimes. She was training to become a midwife, so she had mastered not taking things to heart, she was always dealing with pregnant women.
"You must be Eugenia Dobreva? Here are your reports typed up. Unfortunately we don't have any availability next week Friday but does Tuesday 3 pm suit you?" she asked a patient.
Eugenia struggled with infertility, and after 3 miscarriages and one stillborn she was pregnant again, with everything going smoothly so far. However, due to her history she had checkups every two weeks or whenever she felt something amiss, like today.
"Yes sure, thank you so much, Nurse Syed. See you next week!" she responded. God bless her. She was so cheery even after losing 4 children.
"Done for the day, Liz?" asked Maria, a fellow student-midwife. She was the only one Waliha remotely spoke to, otherwise she busied herself running around to ensure all pregnant ladies were comfortable. And there were loads.
Waliha simply nodded and smiled at her, exhausted. She gathered her things and headed to the staff room.
Waliha didn't go down the university route. She didn't want to spend years getting a degree, then masters, then hunting for a job like others. She went for a degree-level apprenticeship in Midwifery which by the end of four years she would be a qualified midwife. Her apprenticeship was under the NHS and she was getting paid for the 2 days she worked in a week. She spent 2 other days at her college studying. And one day was free, which she spent time volunteering at Muslim Scout events or with Shanzae, Warda and her mum.
She liked what she did. Yes, there was a lot of blood and she sometimes would end up praying desperately for the birthing process, but taking care of those newborns were the highlight. Blood tests weren't so terrible nor were clinical examinations. A lot of the time the main midwife was there for the first few times so she learned the ropes and then she would be by herself. She had removed catheters, however, which she hated the most. Once she was registered, she could choose to help with the infants and neonatal care. Or other roles too. She changed her mind all the time, so right now she didn't give it much thought. She had just begun her second year.
Her job distracted her from home. Wajid had ordered her to go back to the main house. Not because he didn't want her there, but because he wanted her to be there for Shanzae. Wasir used his twisted ways to get what he wanted, and that was Shanzae. She protested throughout the entire marriage process, as did her family, but money can buy you a lot of shit. And she guessed he threatened them. He publicised their marriage so he made sure they had a grand wedding but because Shanzae didn't cooperate, he didn't let the press take as many photos as he usually would. To their relief he spent most of his time away from home, vacationing, spending money and using whores to keep him satisfied, but him being at home was hell. He would pester her about the business, so much that Wajid, Mum and her would lock themselves away in one portion of the mansion. Thankfully it was their fathers house so he couldn't do much about it.
Her father spent his time going back and forth from England to Pakistan. He had matters to attend to, and his fragile health kept anyone from going to him with such matters. Waliha had sent Warda to their paternal grandparents house, using the excuse that it was closer to her sixth form. It was true though.
Her heart bled for Shanzae. But she admired her a lot too. Spending time with Wajid only strengthened her resolve. She would divorce Wasir as soon as she could and marry Wajid in a heartbeat. Of course she didn't tell him that, she thought he would find another woman by the time she was free of his maniac brother. She did everything within her power to disrupt Wasir's life when she could; do what she could to make him hate her.
