bravery

n. courageous character or behaviour

It was a race against time. I had to get home before my dad woke up or he would surely kill me. I had to get home soon.

5:36, only 24 more minutes.

5:41, only 19 minutes,

5:45, Getting off the train, it takes a long time to get home.

5:52, Not even halfway there.

5:57, my house is at the end of the block

5:59, Slipping the key through the front door...

The grandfather clock at the front of my house chimed 6:00. I tiptoed silently up the stairs, and thought I was in the clear.

"Where do you think you're going?"

My heart turned to ice and my lungs started to gasp for air. I slowly turned around to face my dad.

"I- I- Uh-" I stuttered.

"Where the hell were you"

No response.

"Answer me. Where. Were. You." he demanded.

"I uh- I went on a walk around the neighborhood"

"THATS BS, WHERE WERE YOU REALLY DEVIN"

"I WAS ON A WALK" I screamed.

"I DON'T BELIEVE YOU" He raised his hand in the air. I felt the searing touch of his palm meeting my cheek. And then came the pain. It was like nothing I had felt before, the heat and the friction made it so much worse. But I didn't cry, I didn't scream, I was brave. I had to be brave. The shock wore off and I took off up the stairs, taking two at a time. My dad was on my tail, but I was way faster and more fit than him. I made it to my room and slammed the door and quickly locked it. Without hesitation I grabbed a bag and threw things into it. How could all of my life fit into this small bag you may ask. The answer is that it can't. I had to leave things behind. A lot of things. I ripped photographs out of their frames and put them into a folder. I grabbed my secret stash of goldfish and threw them in too. My dad was pounding on my door.

"DON'T MAKE ME BREAK THIS DEVIN, I WILL BREAK THIS DOOR"

I didn't answer. Then came a slew of cuss words.

"I'M GIVING YOU TILL THE COUNT OF THREE TO OPEN UP OR IM COMING IN."

I grabbed my bag and said goodbye to my entire life.

1!!!! I shoved my dresser in front of my door, I might be small, but im strong

2!!!! I ran over to my window and opened it. I stared out onto the ten or fifteen foot drop. I gulped, sweat ran down my face.

Be brave Devin. As my dad yelled 3, I jumped.

Pause- You may be wondering- "Devin did you just jump from a 2 and a half story window?" The short answer is, no, no I did not. It was all an illusion, a figment of your imagination.
