My Dad drives up with our trailer hooked up to his truck. He parks next to a tree and I take a few steps forward as he gets out of the truck.

He pauses briefly as he takes in the scene before him. Me, standing in the middle of the tree-filled piece of land. An unconscious man leaning up against a tree. A beat up, thin, scraggly mare tied up. I have to agree, it's a lot to take in.

After he regains his composure, he walks over and gives me a look that says he wants me to explain.

"Welllll...." I stutter as I try to start.

"I was walking Benny and I came across a terrible squealing sound. I ran in the direction of the sound and found the man over there whipping this poor mare who was tied up. I yelled at him to stop but he wouldn't! It was the most heartbreaking thing ever so I attacked him and he went unconscious but I didn't mean for it to happen and..."

"Calm down Becca, deep breaths," my dad interrupts.

I take a couple huge breaths and finish the story. He nods and looks at his feet for a second, obviously thinking. Then, without another word he pulls out his phone and calls 911 to get the EMS to come out for the man. After a short conversation he clicked his phone off and looked up.

"The EMS is on their way here. After the man is taken care of, we will discuss the horse. For now we will bring her to the farm try to clean her off a little bit."

I give a quick nod and and jog to the tree to untie Benny and put him in the car. I set him in the front passenger seat of our truck and unhooked his leash- rolling it up and placing it on the floorboard.

I shut the door and walk over to help my dad load the mare. I know it wasn't going to be easy. My dad is already over there letting the mare smell him. She is obviously way more scared of him than she was me; she probably thinks he looks a lot like the man that abused her.

"Hey Dad, I observe something and have an idea..." I began.

"I think the mare is more scared of you because you resemble the man a little bit. How about I try to load her? I think it will probably be much easier and less frightening for her."

My dad gave me a look as if I was insane.

"Are you kidding me?! You're 15! This horse could trample you if she spooks or she can run away. I'm not going to put you in a dangerous situation with an un-trustable animal like this!" He exclaims.

"But Dad... She won't be as frightened with me, she already took some grass from my hand earlier and I've been talking to her... I know she's going to be crazy for awhile but it's not her fault! Someone badly abused her! What do you expect? Just let me load her. Or at least let my try."

My dad pondered my response for a minute or two before he let out a sigh.

"Alright, go ahead. But if she almost hurts you I'm taking the lead rope." He said

I nodded and strode over to the horse and put my hand out. She sniffed me and didn't snort, that was a good sign. She didn't pull back this time either."

"Gooood girlllll" I coo softly.

Now it's time to make my move. I walk slowly to the not that is keeping the mare tide up. I slowly start to undo it, and luckily the mare stands still. Once it is untied, I pull it free and coil it up and take hold.

I stand there for a second, giving the mare time to adjust and settle. She seems okay with it all, so I take a step. At first she's resistant, but soon she obliques and takes a step after me. Then I take another step and she follows. I can feel tension in the top and decide to stop for a minute and give her a chance to relax.

"You're a good girl baby, good job." I say softly. She seems to relax at the sound of my soft voice.

Then I start taking a few more slow steps and she follows. Every few steps she stops and gets tense, but I talk to her and she continues on. We are almost to the trailer.

When the mare is in front of the trailer, she digs her hooves into the soil and stops dead in her tracks. Her head goes straight up and she starts snorting. I stop walking and let her settle down. She doesn't settle down to much, but she does stop snorting.

"Hold on a sec!" I think to myself.

I dig my hand into the pocket of my jeans and pull out some mints. I crinkle the wrapper and the mare sniffs. When she gets the scent of the mints, she starts to try to reach her head out towards me. I keep crinkling the wrapper and walk forward in the trailer. The mare surprisingly follows and I successfully get her all the way into the trailer and tied up. I give her to mints for her good behavior and walk out of the trailer, closing the door behind me.

I walk back to the truck and hop into the passenger side with Benny on my lap, and my Dad drives back to the ranch, to the horses new home.
