I stood with a frown as I looked at the distraught red head in the letterman jacket long since dirty and worn out and covered in blood, "she's dead, she's one of them now I put her down." His voice was what I imagined a shattering heart to sound like.

The boy in the letterman jacket is my best friend Teddy, and the walker he had just put down was our English teacher, Mrs. Varda, she was the only thing standing between us and chaos a damn between hope and fear, and that damn just flooded letting the blood red liquid drown Teddy as the sound of a gunshot rang through my ears.

Things weren't always this way.

Once upon a time I lived in a nice little house with a nice little family of four, I was on track to becoming valedictorian and prom queen, but good things never really last, I'd been separated from everyone in my life other then Teddy when all hell broke lose, we didn't manage to find anything but some hand guns and a back pack stuffed with supplies so far but it has held us over for awhile.

Our only hope was to make it into Atlanta on foot, but the closer we got to the city the worse things started to look, it was looking like an overrun waste land.

"New plan, head to the Quarry." Teds voice was booming, I knew what he was referring to the place where my father and Shane use to take us camping but something about the idea just seemed wrong to me "what if there's walkers in the woods? We could also get lost with little to no resources." I just didn't think it was a good idea but he had his ways of convincing me.

"We're not lost I'm telling you we're not lost!" His voice was booming and annoyed, we're lost and we have no clue how to get to the quarry at this point, we were stumbling through the woods of Atlanta with no clue which way we were going or which way we came from.

"We're lost." We both looked around at the tall winding trees and I knew that he knew I was right, we both looked at each other and then as If agreeing to something completely unspoken, we started to walk towards in silence, we didn't know where we were going but wherever we ended up we'd end up there together.

"Is that smoke?" My voice was low and tired, it had been hours without food or water, we just walked on in comfortable silence until eventually smoke caught my eye, smoke from what would likely be a camp fire or bonfire, that meant people had to be near by, we both took off running our feet carrying us towards it and we rushed quickly through the branches stumbling and tripping having our arms up as we shoved leafs out of the way.

We saw people around a campfire and Ted called out something loudly but I didn't hear it, everything had become slow and blurred and I quickly cursed myself for an injury I had obtained during an earlier clash with other survivors, i touched my shoulder and realized the gunshot wound had at some point started bleeding, bleeding enough to soak through my bra and my shirt and my jacket and still be soaked and red, I was probably dying of blood loss and the running hadn't helped me in the slightest.

I heard loud voices I couldn't quite make out and this was clearly the end things became oddly light as the faded to black and I almost thought I heard Shane's voice one last time, the likelihood of that was impossible but it was a nice end to a tragic tale.
