Aberration Eradication

Light was swords through the blinds of the board room. Frozen, silent and still; the seven members sat awaiting his arrival. Nobody moved and no sound was made, time didn't exist here; time meant nothing. The room remained focused as footsteps echoed through the corridor until he emerged. A tall man, dark grey hair slicked back to meet his neck; his eyes dark and tired, capable of looking through anyone. His glasses rested gently on his nose, although loose fitted as constant adjustment was necessary. A shadow crossed his face, for a moment he scanned the room mentally assessing the people before his very eyes. Once the examination had been completed he marched over to the window and opened the blinds. Light flooded the shaded room, he stood there in admiration. Gazing outside he could see the scenery of the city below, he turned his head to the stone figures at the table. His mouth curled down at the edges and wrinkles lined his forehead and eyes, from laughter or pain, his chin seemed square; a building block holding up the remainder of his head. He was the one known by the name Mr. L. Kruger.

As silently as he entered he sank into his ebony throne at the end of the glass table. A king of his very own kingdom, here all laws passed through him and him alone. His gaze fell upon the room once more, finally he arose and spoke.

"No explanation is needed; I trust you fully understand the purpose of us being here?"

His voice was rough, although had a smooth undertone like a carefully written song. It was sharp and to the point, it informed with authority yet welcomed a gentle confidence. However, his piercing glare was enough to make a pacifier out of any Sergeant Major. Silence fell upon the room again, one man opened his mouth but no sound left. A familiar sound of footsteps echoed through the corridor once more, this time louder and quicker. A women, round of face, stood in the doorway; her breath hastening, it was clear she had been running. Her auburn hair was brushed back into a tight bun, securely fastened and stiff with hairspray. She looked at the room as if it were a graveyard, dead and somewhat daunting. All eyes turned to her as she collected herself and entered the room like a well rehearsed actor. She was the first to speak.

"I take it by the exhilarating atmosphere in here that I haven't missed much"

"Ah, Miss. Sarah, always a pleasure to have you as a member of this meeting" His tone was a hybrid between flattery and despair; one might say he was being sarcastic. She chuckled at his remark and took her seat as boldly as she had entered. The room seemed to come to life; the manager of finance carefully organised his well written monthly reports. He admired them, for he knew the true value of his work, a vision not so commonly shared within the board room. Next to him a tall trim man, with dark brown hair, sculpted and shaped in such a form it appeared to defy gravity. He was the youngest of the committee and prided himself on his electronic know-how; He was in charge of all the technological advancements in both company and products, both of which would not be possible if his father was not the head of the organisation. Mr. Kruger continued with his well rehearsed speech.

"As I was saying before I was....pleasantly interrupted, those of you keeping up to date with Miss. Sarah's-"

She cleared her throat.

"My apologies, Mrs. Engelman's reports on the development of this situation should understand that there has been a break-through. It is our job to obtain that information before he has a chance to use it; god knows what destruction could be unleashed onto the planet."

"But Dad-"

Mr. Kruger glared at his son. He was not a man to be interrupted. His son continued to speak.

"I thought you were going to use this as an excellent business opportunity?" All eyes turned to the young man. "Don't pretend you're all good and proper, we all know the real reason why we're doing this" He said with a confident smirk, he jerked an eyebrow at his Father-signalling for him to continue.

"Yes," He scorned. "We will use it as a business opportunity if the product he creates allows us to, at the moment it is uncertain. Does that answer your question?"

"Wonderfully Father"

Sarah shifted uncomfortably in her seat and glanced across the table at the blonde haired woman who was busily getting her portfolio ready to present; everyone was... it was a performance- stand up and say your piece before sinking back to your seat- a performance that Sarah had not prepared for. She performs on a different stage, not in a board room, but outside in the real world manipulating everyday people into believing her persona: the masked face of the company.

What seemed like an eternity passed in the board room, though in reality filled the space of less than an hour. Sarah unconsciously doodled on the back of some paper, mimicking the actions of a professional scribe; who else would read her personal notes? She listened to the young man talk about bugs and hidden cameras and endured the gruelling speech about how the perimeter around the house has been secured; she never was into all that stuff...too much paperwork.

Her living was all about distancing herself and reviewing, and manipulating, a situation from a safe distance. Mr Kruger handed her a deadline, which she wrote in her black book and hid it away in her purse. He shook her hand and without looking back to anyone in the room, she left and began to make her way back home to her other life.
