Mew's POV
The first thing I needed to do was let my family know what was going on without giving them too many details. I didn't want to worry them, but I also needed them to be aware of what was happening and what might happen.
I took a taxi to the nearest bus, and then took several buses back to Chicago, and then a train to the neighborhood where my family was before, finally walking up to the door of the house that I grew up in.
I took a deep breath before I knocked. For all I knew, this might be the last time I would see them, maybe forever, or maybe just for a while. I didn't know how life would end up going or where the road that I was on would take me, and I wanted us all to be prepared for the worst.
When I knocked, it took a few minutes for someone to come to the door. While I waited, I heard chaos from inside, which made sense. It was early in the morning, and my three younger siblings were probably getting ready for school.
I'd had to travel all night and wait several hours in between a few of the buses during the hours when they did not run, so I was hoping I could get a little rest for a couple of hours before I had to head out again.
My youngest brother, Gabriel, opened up the door, smiling up at me and already dressed in his uniform.
"Mew!" he said, hugging me. He pulled back and looked at me as if I had been very bad. "What are you doing here? You're not in trouble, are you?"
I ruffled his hair, not sure if I wanted to explain the whole situation to a seven-year-old just yet.
"Don't worry about me. Are you all ready for school?"
He nodded, "That's why I answered the door. Susie and Rachel are still getting ready."
I smiled and let out a little laugh. "Well, they have more in the morning to do than you, so I guess that's expected. May I come in?"
He nodded and let me pass before closing the door behind me.
"You should come into the kitchen," he said. "Mama's making pancakes still, so if we hurry, she might make you some, too."
My stomach growled in response. I was hungry, I'd been up all night, and I hadn't eaten since dinner. I'd been through a lot since then, too.
I followed Gabriel into the kitchen, where my mother was making pancakes. These had little chocolate chips in them since there wasn't really an abundance of fresh fruit in the winter months. In the summer, she usually made them with blueberries, and they were the most delicious things on the face of this Earth.
"Hi, mom," I said, feeling strange. She would know that something was off since I was here, and right now, she looked like she was seeing a ghost instead of her own son.
"Mew? What are you doing here?" she asked.
"There are some things I need to tell you," I said, looking meaningfully at Gabriel standing next to me.
"All right. Why don't we talk after the kids go to school?" she said. "I'm sure your father can stay for a few minutes, too."
"Perfect."
"Would you like some pancakes?" she asked. "I should have enough batter to make some for you, too."
"That would be great."
I watched as she made pancakes, and then Susie and Rachel came into the kitchen, blinking away their surprise at seeing me. Rachel wanted to be an artist. She is in high school now. She was in her sophomore year, I was fairly certain. Susie was in her first year of middle school and had no idea what she wanted to be.
