chapter one: everything has changed

It wasn't always like this. I didn't always feel this funny thing in my stomach, like the nerves the night before a big test mixed with the excitement of being on a rollercoaster. I've only noticed it recently, the "closer" we get in age. I've known Jacob my whole life. I've been with him everyday since I was born, and yet everything feels like it's changing and I don't know why or how.

It literally started with a look. A stupid fucking, amazing, entirely consuming look.

Jacob was over for dinner like he is basically every night. He and Dad were in the kitchen cooking while Mom and I sat at the counter talking. The guys were having a bit of banter like always and Dad roasted the shit out of Jacob. We were all laughing our asses off and then Jake and I made eye contact and my heart stopped. I don't even know why, it was just this look in his eye that was so... captivating. I guess Dad heard mine or his thoughts though because he was real awkward around us for the rest of the night.

Before Jacob left to run around outside in his wolf form with the rest of the shape-shifters I saw him and Dad talking secretly on the front porch. When I asked Dad about it later though he just insisted that he "didn't know what I was talking about", which I know is absolute bull because he and I both know he's ass at lying to me. I'm just confused why he's trying so hard to do it now...

"What we're you and Dad talking about last night?" his eyes darted around my bedroom sort of shocked.

"What do you mean, Nessie?" Really? Him too?

"Last night... you know, before you left?" he shrugged.

"I don't even remember, nothing important I guess."

"Are you sure? You both seemed pretty concerned and he swears he doesn't know what I'm talking about."

"Nessie, I really don't remember. Could you just drop it?"

"What the hell Jacob. What are you guys hiding??"

"Okay fine... we were talking about you."

"...What do you mean?" Does this have to do with the look?

"I don't know, just like school and how old you're getting, and how we'll have to move again soon."

"That's all?"

"Jesus Nes, I told you what we were talking about. Could you just let it go?" Why's he being so damn defensive? I just want to know why they were talking about me without including me? They could've had that conversation inside, plus he wouldn't have tried so hard to hide this. And the conversation out on the porch seemed way more serious than "Renesmee's graduating soon and Carlisle's supposed to be 35 but looks 23, gotta go to the Montana house for a few years."

Obviously this isn't what Jacob said they were talking about, but what could it be? Maybe it's a wolf thing I don't know about or... oh my God.

"Hey Jacob?"

"What's up Nes?"

"...Can I ask you something?"

"Anything." Oh God, here it goes.

"Have you ever imprinted on someone," he already looks really shocked at the question. "I mean, it's just that, the other wolves they talk about how amazing it is to have imprinted on someone and I've never heard you talk about it." ...Silence.

"Ness I-"

"Hey Jake!" Mom hollered from the living room. "Could you come... help us with something down here?"

"Mom don't you have like, 8 vampires and a hand full of wolves down there that could help?"

"Yeah but... we need Jacob specifically."

"It's alright, I can help. I'll see you later Nes." He stood up, kissed me on the forehead and left. What the hell.

Since Jacob and I are the only people in the house who actually eat, we went out to dinner tonight. We go out together a lot, which usually results in a lot of... confusion from the waitstaff.

"Could I get your drink orders for you?" The skinny blonde waitress asked.

"Could I just have a Diet Coke please?"

"Definitely, and you sir?"

Jacob cleared his throat, "Uhm, same."

"Alright I'll go ahead and grab those for you guys, and could I just say, you two make a beautiful couple!" See what I mean? The waitress walked off to get our drinks while Jacob and I shared a chuckle.

"Hey uhm, you never answered my question earlier.." I find it really suspicious that Mom needed him downstairs immediately after I asked him if he had imprinted on anyone.

"Oh uh, now isn't really the best time Nes," his eyes again, were darting around the room as if he was looking for a way out of this conversation.

"What do you mean Jacob? It's a simple yes or no question, have you imprinted on someone or not?" I am not taking this bullshit again.

"Okay fine, uh yes. I have imprinted on someone. Can we drop it now?"

"What the fuck? How did I not know about this? Who is she... it is a she right?" he chuckled.

"Yes Nessie, it is a she. But it doesn't really matter who she is."

"What do you mean it doesn't matter? You're my best friend, you know who your soulmate is and you haven't even told me! Go on, spill your guts!"

"No really, don't worry about it."

"What the hell Jacob, why can't you just tell me?" This is getting real fucking annoying.

"You know what? Fine." he seems angry but he's going to tell me so, yay?

He seems hesitant before he starts talking again. "I just want to remind you, while they all seem romantic not all imprint relationships are or will ever be."

"Oh my God, is it my Mom. Oh wait no, it's Aunt Alice. Rosalie? Oh my God it's Carlisle isn't it. You imprinted on Carlisle."

"No," he chuckled. "It's none of them. Anyway, back to what I was saying before I was RUDELY interrupted. Some imprint relationships can be strictly platonic, or even a family type relationship."

"Jesus Jacob, spit it out."

"Uhm okay..." Why am I nervous all of the sudden? "It's you Nessie... I imprinted on you, the day you were born."
