"Shit" I swore as i tripped off the bus and scraped my knee on the pavement.
"You all right down there?" The driver called.
"Yeah", I groan as i pull myself back up. "Thanks".
There's a rip on my pants at the knee. Great look for your first day at work.
I fix my hair as best I can and walk towards the strip of shops across the road.
Java cafe is at the end of the shops so it doesn't get much buisness, the reason why I chose to work there.
I walk through the door into the small cafe.
The scent of coffee immediately hits me. The walls are a dark shade of pink and have started to peal.
I am greeted by a round faced lady with wild red hair and a grin planted on her pink cheeks.
"Clair dear, I'm so glad your hear". "I'm Annie, we spoke on the phone". "Yeah, nice to meet you", I reply.
She takes me around the back. "Well I own the place darling but sadly we'll only get to see each other sunday afternoons".
From behind a pile of boxes walks a tall girl with bleached hair and a ring hanging from her nose. She looks me over before giving a small smile.
"This here is Steph, she'll help you out with things today".
"You can just set up the tables to start, I'll be in my office if you have any questions dear". Anne smiled as she left up the creaking stairs.
"You'll only need two tables, not a busy day", Steph said as she piled muffins behind the window.
"You go to school around here? i think I've seen you".
"Yeah we go to the same school. You're in the year above me". I'm greatfull Steph isn't too cold.
For the next hour I listen as Steph tells me about her boyfriend and how he's always flirting with other girls but I don't mind. I actually find it quite interesting.
I've only had one boyfriend but it wasn't anything serious.
The door opens and a boy walks in. He is extremely striking. His jet black hair and green hair have customers look up from their coffee's and stare.
"Hey", he says to Steph as he swings his apron over his head.
Our eyes meet. "And who's this"? He grins.
"Clair, shes new". Steph replies with an unimpressed look on her face.
"Well Clair, I'm Lucas, we'll be working together".
"Lucky you", Steph murmurs as she takes off her apron. She grabs her bag and walks to the door. "My shifts over, Lucas will take you from here. Nice meeting you Clair".
"You too Steph". I reply genuinely.
For the rest of the day Lucas and i work quietly together with small polite conversations of me asking how to use the coffee machine and could you pass the mop?
At the end of the day he asks if i want a ride home. Surprised i accept, not wanting to miss a chance to connect to the guy i'm going to be working with for the next few months.
I wait in his car as he locks up the cafe.
The air smells of leather. The backseat is covered with a range of books, clothes and chocolate bars.
"Sorry about the mess", Lucas cringes as the looks over the mess in the car.
"I share this car with my brother so it can get pretty filthy back there.
That makes sense. I couldn't imagine Lucas being the messy type. But I guess the books belong to him.
"So where are we heading"?
"I live on Partridge road".
"Not too far from my house". Lucas says with a friendly smile.
I like Lucas. He is quiet and i usually don't do quiet but he seems like a nice guy.
"Where do you live?" I ask.
"I live near the Grenis woods".
"Wow that's pretty far. I didn't know people lived up there".
"Haha yeah, it's pretty quite up there but it's alright".
We get talking about general things school and friends and he offers me some of his chocolate bars.
As our conversation starts flowing its ends too quick by our arrival at my house.
"Bye Lucas" i wave from my front porch.
"Goodbye Clair". Lucas watches as Clair goes into her house.
He sighs then drives up home to Grenis woods.
