Dabi asks Hawks an important question.

“Hey.”

Keigo turned around, giving a silent confused expression.

Dabi heaved and fiddled with his fingers.

“Listen, I… you… fuck, what do I say… um-”

Keigo’s confused expression melted to an adorably amused smile.

“Don’t look at me like that, I’ve prepared for this, I swear .”

Keigo laughed. It was a wonderful sound. It sounded like the rustling leaves as the wind shook its branches. Fierce, like a hurricane.

A smile made its way towards Dabi’s face. “Shut up and let me finish, you overgrown pigeon.”

Keigo grinned smugly like the motherfucker he was.

“Look… four years ago, you came into my life. You said you wanted in, and spewed out this bullshit that you wanted hero society to crumble, how they’re corrupted, how they corrupted you, yadda yadda- all that cliche stuff. I never believed you. You were too fast, too quick for your own good. You could’ve at least put up a more convincing act. I know you could.

“I thought I could just leave you breadcrumbs. You looked torn trying to play two different people. I have to admit, it was satisfying to witness the downfall of a hero first hand. But… damn, birdie, you worked yourself to the bone. I… I don’t know when I started caring. When you started to care for me. God, we were getting more stupid every day.

“And… I dunno, you somehow managed to weave your way into my heart. Time and time again, you had to leave our bed early in the morning for hero duties, you had to interrupt our dates because of some shitty villain’s scheme, and you’re too heroic, god dammit, you were only twenty-two .

“I didn’t think I’d have to admit it to your face, but the day you decided to run away with me was the best day of my entire life. Fuck, you were willing to ditch the one thing that shaped you to where you were back then just for me . Remember those mornings?”

Keigo nodded.

“The mornings where nothing mattered. Where heroism and villainy ceased to exist. Where I would play with your feathers and kiss you good morning, and you’d ruffle my hair and make us breakfast. It was- it was perfect.”

Dabi paused. Keigo tilted his head.

“But- it never lasted. How could it?” Dabi murmured softly, “We had different goals. Different ambitions. I loved the soft mornings, but I would do anything to see Enji burn. He was the man that cast Fuyumi, Natsuo, and me away. He- he ignited this spark inside me, to surpass All Might. It never died down, and he expected me to just give up the one thing that made me special, the one thing that still made him pay attention to me.

“And you clearly admired him too much to see it. But after everything… you walked me through rehabilitation. You pushed me to rekindle my flames. You helped me reconnect with my family, and by all odds, forgive him. Forgive them. Forgive you .”

Dabi closed his eyes as the eyes of everyone he once hated flew across his mind. Those passersby that never did anything when they witnessed anything remotely abusive. The cold eyes of the President of the Commission doing anything in his willpower to keep the image of hope of the Safety Commission. Twice’s horrified gaze as he spluttered out blood and fell onto the shaking floor, and gold, golden eyes widening in pure fear.

“After all the hell we’ve been through… it shook hero society to the core. But every time I look at your scars, I think, was it worth it…?

Keigo had stayed silent. Dabi practically heard the moment his breath hitched. Was it his own breath?

“But it’s okay now. Everyone’s rebuilt and moved on. There’s new heroes to idolize, you know, Bakugo, Midoriya, S- Todoroki. Even that bird assistant of yours. They’re gonna do good in the world until someone decides to fuck it all up again. But that isn’t our problem. For now… we can have those soft mornings all we want.”

Dabi cleared his throat. “Whoops. Didn’t mean to cry there. Would’ve made a mess.”

He knelt down and pulled out a ring.

“Fuyumi helped me choose it. She said the ruby would match your wings. Toga will help me organize the wedding, except for the menu, she’s a crazy bastard. Compress will host some magic trick show, ’cause he knows you love them for some reason. You’ve always been a childish brat.”

Dabi huffed, a bittersweet smile turning the corners of his lips. “Those idiots wanted to organize it right away, but I wanted to wait until we settled down, away from the public eye. When we could do all of this in peace without any more villain interruptions.”

He paused, feeling the loving embrace of Keigo’s pretense through the winds.

“Keigo Takami, my love, my light…”

A heart wrenching sob filled his ears, but he pressed on.

“I should’ve said something sooner.”

Beads of red dropped onto the dirt. He slowly leaned his forehead on Keigo Takami’s gravestone. The remains of the planted flowers on the gravestone’s soil, where his wingless body was buried six feet under, was set aflame and reduced to ashes with a flick of his hand. Silent sobs wracked his body as the wind continued to howl louder in sympathy of his sorrow.

“Would you have said yes?”
